Who among us, as sports journalists and fans, does not remember the loud and exciting events that preceded the announcement of the name of the Saudi player who won the Asian Football Confederation's Best Player Award for 2005, when the competition was narrowed down to the two great Saudi stars, Hamad Al-Montashari and Sami Al-Jaber?
- It was commonly known that the identity of the winner would be revealed during the awards ceremony, which required the presence of the nominees, amid the uncertainty of the name of the player chosen by the committee responsible for determining the winner. Perhaps the one who cannot forget those dramatic events the most is the writer of these lines, who announced the challenge a full month before the ceremony through an article I published in the newspaper "Al-Riyadiyah" titled: "Congratulations in advance to Hamad Al-Montashari," where I was the first to predict his victory of the Asian Player of the Year award for that year, based on the data and the mechanism of the system established by the continental federation to select the winner.
- However, that prediction ignited widespread reactions from Al-Hilal supporters, including some media voices, along with other parties making strenuous attempts to change the course of the award and direct it towards the player whom I described in a series of my articles as representing a "media aura," which is the capable captain Sami Al-Jaber.
- These attempts reminded me of what happened in the case of Captain Yasser Al-Qahtani's transfer to Al-Hilal, after he was just a step away from wearing the Ittihad jersey, had it not been for what was said about Al-Hilal's interventions, as pointed out by the former president of Al-Qadisiyah Club, Jasem Al-Yaqout, in statements he made about the role of high sports authorities at that time.
- However, the case of the Best Asian Player Award was completely different; the decision-maker in determining the winner is the Asian Federation, through its specialized committee, and not the media campaigns or pressures that may be exerted from here or there. Despite the attempts that I see aimed at repeating previous scenarios, the result came contrary to what the proponents of those efforts wanted, and Hamad Al-Montashari won the award, causing those attempts to fail in achieving their goal.
- At that time, the president of Ittihad Club, Mansour Al-Balawi, was fighting a battle on one front, while I was fighting, through my articles and interventions in sports programs, another front, given my role as the media center director at Ittihad Club. The aim of my position was to defend Hamad Al-Montashari's right to the award, away from any other considerations, even the former president of the Asian Federation, Mohammed bin Hammam, had a stance regarding my intervention in this matter, as did Abdullah Al-Dabal, may he rest in peace, which was evident in a television intervention that brought me together with the latter, in the presence of my colleague Batal Al-Qous.
- As for the details of what happened, how Hamad Al-Montashari won, and what our beloved captain Sami Al-Jaber did, that is a story worth telling on its own; for it carries exciting events and unforgettable positions, and because it represents, from my point of view, a victory for the right and the deserving player who earned the award. Those events prompted me to write another article in the same newspaper, titled: "Exciting," where I referenced a song by the artist Mohamed Mounir. This is a story I will tell you later, not merely to refresh the memory of those who experienced that phase, but out of fear that the same scenario might repeat itself today with captain Firas Al-Buraikan.
- After the competition for the Best Asian Player Award for 2026 has emerged, according to what I follow of nominations and competition, among prominent names, including our Saudi stars, led by captain Salem Al-Dosari and Firas Al-Buraikan, I find myself faced with an important question: Do we learn from the lessons of the past, or do we allow attempts to influence the deserving of Asian awards to be repeated?
A final whisper
- I write this warning, while at the same time looking forward to this competition being based on criteria of merit and achievement, away from media noise, sports fanaticism, and any pressures that do not serve the fairness of competition.
And tomorrow, God willing, we will meet with a new whisper titled "Congratulations in advance to Firas Al-Buraikan... Best Asian Player Award."
