اندلعت عدة انفجارات وحرائق أمس (الإثنين) على متن سفينة شحن كانت متجهة إلى العاصمة المالية للهند مومباي؛ ما أسفر عن سقوط 40 حاوية في بحر العرب ودفع معظم أفراد الطاقم إلى القفز في الماء هربا من النيران.
وأوضح سكرتير هيئة إدارة الكوارث بولاية كيرالا شيخار كورياكوس أن السفينة (وان هاي 503) التي ترفع علم سنغافورة تعرضت لحادثة على بعد نحو 144 كيلومترا (90 ميلا) من ساحل الولاية الواقعة جنوب الهند.
وأضاف «وفقا للمعلومات الأولية.. كان على متن السفينة 22 عاملا.. قفز 18 منهم إلى البحر وتم إنقاذهم على متن قوارب».
وأظهرت صور ومقاطع فيديو نشرها خفر السواحل الهندي عبر منصة إكس عمودا كثيفا من الدخان الأسود يتصاعد من السفينة وعددا من الحاويات مفتوحة ومبعثرة بالقرب من مصدر الدخان.
وقال مسؤول للعلاقات العامة بوزارة الدفاع عبر إكس أيضا «السفينة تحترق حاليا وتنجرف».
ولم يكشف المسؤولون عن طبيعة الشحنة الموجودة داخل الحاويات ولا عن سبب الانفجارات.
وشهد الشهر الماضي حادثة مشابهة قبالة كيرالا، حيث غرقت سفينة حاويات أخرى؛ ما أدى إلى سقوط 100 حاوية شحن في بحر العرب.
وأكدت المديرية العامة للشحن يوم الجمعة أنه لم ترد أي تقارير عن تلوث نفطي جراء تلك الحادثة.
Several explosions and fires broke out yesterday (Monday) aboard a cargo ship heading to India's financial capital Mumbai; resulting in the loss of 40 containers into the Arabian Sea and prompting most of the crew to jump into the water to escape the flames.
The Secretary of the Disaster Management Authority of Kerala, Shekhar Kuriakose, explained that the ship (Wan Hai 503), which flies the Singapore flag, encountered an incident about 144 kilometers (90 miles) off the coast of the southern Indian state.
He added, "According to initial information... there were 22 workers on board the ship... 18 of them jumped into the sea and were rescued by boats."
Images and videos shared by the Indian Coast Guard on the X platform showed a thick column of black smoke rising from the ship and several containers open and scattered near the source of the smoke.
A public relations official from the Ministry of Defense also stated on X, "The ship is currently on fire and adrift."
Officials did not disclose the nature of the cargo inside the containers or the cause of the explosions.
Last month, a similar incident occurred off the coast of Kerala, where another container ship sank, resulting in the loss of 100 shipping containers into the Arabian Sea.
The Directorate General of Shipping confirmed on Friday that there were no reports of oil pollution resulting from that incident.
