شهدت مدينة كراتشي الباكستانية في ساعات متأخرة من ليل الإثنين، حدثًا دراماتيكيًا هزّ إقليم السند، إذ تمكن أكثر من 200 سجين من الفرار من سجن مالير بعد سلسلة من الهزات الأرضية التي ضربت المنطقة.
ووفقًا لتقارير إعلامية باكستانية، تسببت الهزات الأرضية في ظهور شقوق في جدران السجن، مما أدى إلى انهيار جزئي لبعض الحواجز، بما في ذلك بوابة ماريه، وخلق حالة من الفوضى استغلها السجناء للهروب.
وأفادت مصادر أمنية أن السلطات نقلت السجناء إلى منطقة مفتوحة داخل السجن كإجراء احترازي لتجنب الإصابات الناتجة عن الزلزال، لكن هذا القرار تحول إلى فرصة للسجناء، إذ اندلعت أعمال شغب، واشتبك بعضهم مع الحراس، وتمكنوا من الاستيلاء على أسلحة نارية.
وخلال الفوضى، تمكن 216 سجينًا من الفرار، فيما أطلقت الشرطة النار للسيطرة على الوضع، مما أسفر عن مقتل سجين واحد وإصابة آخرين، في عملية وصفها وزير الشؤون القانونية بإقليم السند الباكستاني ضياء الحسن لانجار بأنها: «واحدة من أكبر عمليات الهروب في تاريخ باكستان».
وقامت الشرطة والجيش الباكستاني بتطويق المنطقة وشنّ حملة بحث واسعة النطاق، تم خلالها إلقاء القبض على حوالى 80 من الهاربين، بينما لا يزال العشرات طليقين.
وأشار نائب مفتش السجون، محمد حسن سحتو، إلى أن السلطات تواجه تحديات كبيرة؛ بسبب وجود سجناء خطيرين بين الفارين، وتستمر الجهود الأمنية لاستعادة السيطرة الكاملة وإعادة القبض على بقية السجناء.
The Pakistani city of Karachi witnessed a dramatic event late on Monday night that shook the Sindh province, as more than 200 prisoners managed to escape from Malir Jail following a series of earthquakes that struck the area.
According to Pakistani media reports, the earthquakes caused cracks to appear in the prison walls, leading to partial collapses of some barriers, including the Mari Gate, and creating a state of chaos that the prisoners exploited to escape.
Security sources reported that authorities moved the prisoners to an open area within the prison as a precautionary measure to avoid injuries from the earthquake, but this decision turned into an opportunity for the inmates, as riots broke out, and some clashed with the guards, managing to seize firearms.
During the chaos, 216 prisoners escaped, while police fired shots to regain control of the situation, resulting in the death of one inmate and injuries to others, in an operation described by the Sindh province's Minister of Legal Affairs, Zia Hassan Langar, as: "one of the largest jailbreaks in Pakistan's history."
The police and the Pakistani army cordoned off the area and launched a large-scale search campaign, during which about 80 of the fugitives were apprehended, while dozens remain at large.
Deputy Inspector of Prisons, Muhammad Hassan Sahto, noted that authorities are facing significant challenges due to the presence of dangerous inmates among the escapees, and security efforts continue to regain full control and recapture the remaining prisoners.
