دخل قرار الحكومة البريطانية، حظر بيع السجائر الإلكترونية أحادية الاستخدام حيّز التنفيذ، في خطوة تستهدف الحد من انتشار التدخين بين المراهقين والتقليل من الأضرار البيئية الناتجة عن هذه المنتجات.
وبحسب ما أعلنته السلطات الصحية، فإن القرار يشمل منع بيع السجائر الإلكترونية ذات الاستخدام الواحد التي تُباع غالباً بنكهات حلوة وجاذبة لصغار السن، إذ تشير الإحصاءات إلى تزايد مقلق في استخدامها بين الفئات العمرية الصغيرة، رغم كونها غير مرخصة قانونياً لهذه الفئة.
وأوضحت الحكومة البريطانية، أن المنتجات المحظورة تُسهم في ترسيخ عادة النيكوتين لدى المراهقين، إلى جانب كونها مصدراً لتلوث البلاستيك والبطاريات في البيئة، ما يضيف أعباءً صحية وبيئية مزدوجة.
ويأتي هذا الحظر ضمن إستراتيجية صحية شاملة تتبناها بريطانيا للحد من التدخين بمختلف أشكاله، وتسعى من خلالها إلى الوصول إلى «جيل بلا تدخين» خلال السنوات القادمة، وذلك عبر تشديد القوانين، وتقييد الترويج، وتوسيع حملات التوعية.
ويُنتظر أن تُصاحب القرار متابعة رقابية صارمة على الأسواق ونقاط البيع، فيما تستمر الدعوات من منظمات الصحة العامة لدول أخرى باتخاذ خطوات مماثلة للحد من استخدام هذه المنتجات بين فئات الشباب.
