اضطر وزير الزراعة الياباني، للاستقالة اليوم (الأربعاء)؛ بسبب التداعيات السياسية لتصريحاته الأخيرة التي قال فيها إنه «لم يضطر أبدا إلى شراء الأرز»؛ لأنه حصل عليه من أنصاره كهدايا.
وتأتي الاستقالة فيما يكافح الجمهور وسط ارتفاع أسعار المواد الغذائية الأساسية التقليدية في البلاد إلى مستويات قياسية.
وجاء تعليق تاكو إيتو، الذي اعتبره الكثير من اليابانيين غير متوافق مع حقائق اقتصادية، في ندوة، جرى عقدها يوم الأحد الماضي للحزب الديمقراطي الليبرالي، الذي يقود حكومة أقلية متعثرة.
ويمكن أن تشكل تلك الزلة مشكلة أخرى للحزب قبل انتخابات وطنية من المقرر أن تجرى في يوليو.
ويمكن أن تؤدي خسارة كبيرة إلى تشكيل حكومة جديدة أو إلى استقالة رئيس الوزراء شيجيرو إيشيبا.
وقال إيتو، للصحفيين بعد تقديم استقالته في مكتب رئيس الوزراء: «لقد أدليت بتصريح غير لائق على الإطلاق في وقت يعاني فيه المستهلكون من ارتفاع أسعار الأرز.. وكانت استقالة إيتو هي الأولى تحت قيادة إيشيبا التي بدأت في أكتوبر».
The Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Taku Ito, was forced to resign today (Wednesday) due to the political fallout from his recent statements in which he said he "never had to buy rice" because he received it as gifts from his supporters.
The resignation comes as the public struggles with soaring prices of traditional staple foods in the country, reaching record levels.
Ito's comments, which many Japanese considered out of touch with economic realities, were made at a seminar held last Sunday for the Liberal Democratic Party, which leads a struggling minority government.
This gaffe could pose another problem for the party ahead of national elections scheduled for July.
A significant loss could lead to the formation of a new government or the resignation of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
After submitting his resignation at the Prime Minister's office, Ito told reporters: "I made an entirely inappropriate statement at a time when consumers are suffering from rising rice prices... Ito's resignation is the first under Ishiba's leadership, which began in October."
