The coach of the Saudi national team, Hervé Renard, expressed his dissatisfaction with the start of the match that the "Green" won against their guest, the Indonesian national team, with a score of 3-2 in the Asian playoff qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Renard said: "At the beginning of the match, we were not good, and we conceded a goal from a penalty kick, but the reaction was remarkable. We took the lead, and we should have secured the match after that, but we didn't, and that's what we need to blame ourselves for."
Regarding the performance of the refereeing led by the Kuwaiti Ahmed Al-Ali, Renard said: "When you are a coach, you may sometimes speak angrily with the fourth official, but I do not wish to comment on the refereeing decisions so that they are not misinterpreted. We just want to focus on the upcoming match."
When asked if the team's performance declined after scoring the third goal, Renard confirmed: "I don't think our level dropped because after the third goal we created many chances but wasted them. No one will grant us qualification, but we will strive for it with our faith and abilities."
In response to a question from "Okaz" about the reason for his great confidence in qualifying, Renard elaborated: "A coach, in general, cannot work and succeed without the players. This confidence comes from my extensive knowledge of the players. For example, Feras worked with me six years ago when he was young, and today he had a great match in which he scored two important goals, and I congratulate him for that. There are also young players like Saleh Abu Shamat, in whose eyes you can see his great desire to play in the upcoming World Cup matches."
Regarding his methods of motivating the players, he explained: "I told the players, specifically the young ones like Saleh, that you can play in big matches in the league or the AFC Champions League, but the World Cup remains completely different, and one match in it is worth a lot."
Hervé Renard concluded the conference by emphasizing a key point and said: "We achieved victory and topped the group... this is very important, but we have not actually achieved the goal yet... we must focus on the next match and finish it as it should be."
