للمرة الثالثة يتعثر المنتخب السعودي من تسجيل نتيجة إيجابية بتاريخ 20 يونيو، بعد تعثّره في ثاني مبارياته ضمن منافسات الكأس الذهبية، بعد أن خسر أمام منتخب الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية المُضيف بهدف دون رد في اللقاء الذي جمعهما في أوستن بولاية تكساس، وأحرز الهدف الوحيد للمنتخب الأمريكي المدافع كريس ريتشاردز في الشوط الثاني.
وبهذا الانتصار، حجز المنتخب الأمريكي مقعده في ربع النهائي، بينما تتجه أنظار الأخضر السعودي إلى المواجهة القادمة أمام ترينيداد وتوباغو، التي ستحدد مصيره في البطولة، إذ تعتبر هذه الخسارة الثالثة في هذا التاريخ بالتحديد بعد مباراتين سابقتين، خسر فيهما «الأخضر» مرتين بنتيجة (2-1) و(1-0) أمام منتخبي هولندا، والأوروغواي في نهائيات كأس العالم عامي 1994 و2018.
يذكر أن المنتخب السعودي لعب 53 مباراة رسمية وتجريبية في شهر يونيو، حقق من خلالها 25 انتصارًا، مقابل 6 تعادلات و22 خسارة، وأحرز 81 هدفًا، فيما اهتزت شباكه 70 مرة.
