The former Saudi national team goalkeeper, Mansour Al-Najai, who returned to the green pitch through the Saudi national team for veterans, sees that the limited opportunities for local goalkeepers represent the biggest challenges facing the development of Saudi goalkeeping, especially with the reliance on foreign goalkeepers in clubs. He emphasized that talent alone is not enough without participation, confidence, and gaining experience. In a special interview with "Okaz," Al-Najai recalls moments from his football career, discussing his return to represent the national team in the Gulf Championship for veterans, his ambition to compete for the title, and the importance of past experiences in developing new generations, stressing that wearing the national jersey remains an honor that is not limited by years, and that real competition requires teamwork, focus, and seizing opportunities. Here is the text of the interview:
• How do you evaluate the Saudi national team's match against Kuwait?
•• It was a beautiful and strong match; we performed well and succeeded in taking the lead, but the Kuwaiti team managed to equalize through a penalty. Overall, it was a competitive and good encounter, especially since it was the first match of the tournament. We entered the match with the goal of winning, especially since we were ahead, but in the end, a draw is a point at the start of the journey, and the most important thing is to correct the mistakes from the match and learn from them for the future. The match was balanced in terms of performance, and we saw a great desire from both teams. Yes, we had the opportunity to secure three points, especially after taking the lead, but football has small details that make the difference.
• What does the national team need to correct its course in the upcoming matches?
•• We need to focus more, capitalize on opportunities, maintain balance throughout the minutes of the match, and most importantly, avoid mistakes and convert all available chances in the upcoming encounters.
• What does it mean to you to wear the Saudi national team jersey again, but this time as part of the veterans' team?
•• It's an indescribable feeling; wearing the national jersey is a great honor at all times and places, and no matter how far a player is from the pitch, this jersey holds a special place in every player's heart.
• When you received the invitation to participate, what was your feeling? Did you hesitate before agreeing?
•• I was very happy and did not hesitate for a moment. Such invitations reignite your passion, and the honor of representing the nation does not require thinking. The best part is meeting with fellow players and renewing the relationships and memories that football has created between us.
• How do you describe the atmosphere within the national team given the presence of big names you have previously played with?
•• It's a wonderful atmosphere filled with love and memories. The beautiful thing is that we have come together in one camp again, with a spirit of brotherhood and healthy competition, as if the years have not passed.
• Do you feel that participating has brought back memories of the international matches and tournaments you previously experienced?
•• Absolutely, it has brought back the atmosphere of camps, meetings, and matches, even the details of daily life for players. These are unforgettable memories.
• How did you find working under coach Khalid Al-Qurani? What distinguishes the current group?
•• Coach Khalid Al-Qurani is a highly experienced coach who knows how to deal with players and create a positive atmosphere. What distinguishes the group is the harmony, high spirit, and desire to represent the nation honorably.
• You have experienced many phases in your football career; which phase still lingers in your memory?
•• Representing the Saudi national team remains one of the most cherished phases of my career, and every match I wore the national jersey has a special memory and significance. Honestly, I take pride in every club I wore its emblem; from Dhamak, where it all began, to Al-Ahli, which introduced me to the fans and was my gateway to the Saudi national team, then Al-Hazm, which marked an important turning point in my career, reaching Al-Qadisiyah, Al-Hilal, Al-Faisaly, Al-Batin, and Najran.
Each club has a story, each experience has a memory, and each jersey I wore has a place in my heart. You are all part of the story of Mansour Al-Najai, and without you, the tale would not be complete.
• Who was the toughest striker you faced during your career?
•• I faced many great strikers at both local and international levels, and it's hard to pinpoint just one name, but the intelligent striker who possesses speed and the ability to finish the attack is always the toughest for any goalkeeper.
• Who was the goalkeeper you considered a strong competitor in Saudi football?
•• The competition was strong and beautiful, and we had a distinguished generation of goalkeepers, led by Mohammed Al-Deayea, Mabrouk Zayed, Walid Abdullah, and Abdullah Al-Maiouf, and the competition among us added a lot to the level of goalkeeping.
• Do you miss the atmosphere of international matches and the pressure of competition?
•• Definitely, no matter how far a player is, the spirit of competition and passion remains within them. Hearing the national anthem and standing on the pitch are feelings that cannot be described.
• How do you see the level of Saudi goalkeeping currently compared to the generation you played with?
•• Honestly, there is a difference between our generation and the current generation in goalkeeping, and this is not to diminish the capabilities of current goalkeepers, but the challenge today lies in the limited opportunities for participation.
In our generation, there were many talents and strong competition, and the goalkeeper received enough playing time to gain confidence, correct mistakes, and gain experience.
Today, the presence of foreign goalkeepers in clubs has reduced the opportunities for local goalkeepers and affected their continuity.
Goalkeeping is not built solely on talent and training, but on participation, confidence, and taking responsibility. The Saudi goalkeeper needs a real opportunity to develop and prove their capabilities.
• Do you think the experience of former goalkeepers can contribute to the development of the current generation?
•• Absolutely, field experience is very important, and transferring experiences and correcting small details helps young goalkeepers develop and save a lot of time.
• The Saudi national team includes names like Mabrouk Zayed, Nasser Al-Shamrani, and Saud Al-Khuraibi; do you think these experiences can lead the Green to the title?
•• Certainly, we have great names with extensive experience and a championship mentality, but titles are not achieved by names alone, but through teamwork, spirit, and focus on the pitch. Our goal is to compete and bring home the cup, God willing.
• How do you view the national team's chances in the group that includes Kuwait, Oman, and Iraq?
•• It's a strong group that includes teams with their history and significance in the Gulf, but we respect all competitors, trust in our capabilities, and treat every match as if it were a final.
• What is your message to the Saudi fans who are following the participation of their former stars?
•• We tell them that you are always our source of support and pride, and your presence and following make us very happy. We promise to give our all to make you happy and raise the name of the nation.
• Can we see Mansour Al-Najai continuing in the fields through technical or coaching work after this tournament?
•• Football is a big part of my life, and it is natural for me to think about continuing and serving the sports field, whether in a technical, coaching, or administrative capacity, whenever the right opportunity arises.
• What do you promise the Saudi fans for the rest of the tournament?
•• We promise to exert our utmost effort, to present performances worthy of the name of the Saudi national team, and to meet their expectations in every match.
• Do you see the veterans' team as just a participation to relive memories, or did you come to Qatar to compete for the cup?
•• We came to enjoy the meeting with our brothers and renew memories, but at the same time, we came to compete and represent the nation, and our ambition is certainly to achieve the title.
• Who is the player that surprised you with their level and fitness during the current gathering?
•• Honestly, the whole group has presented remarkable levels, and the beautiful thing is that you see players who have been away from official competitions, but still possess passion, spirit, fitness, and a desire to give.
• If you could go back in time to the beginning of your career, would you choose the same path?
•• Without hesitation, football has given me so much; I have lived through the most beautiful moments, I have been honored to represent my country, and I have met men and friends who will remain in my memory for a lifetime.
• What message do you have for the new generations of goalkeepers?
•• I tell them not to rush to reach their goals; work hard, commit to training, believe in yourselves, and learn from your mistakes. Goalkeeping is a big responsibility that requires a strong personality and patience.
Finally, we may have been away from the pitch for years, but the love for our country and the passion for football have never left us, and today we return to live these feelings once again, with the goal of making our fans happy and raising the name of the Kingdom high, God willing.
