France Football has opened an official investigation in collaboration with the French police, after suspicious bets were detected on the results of the 2026 Ballon d'Or, according to what was revealed by the English newspaper The Guardian.
The newspaper explained that the betting platform "Polymarket" recorded bets from 12 different accounts totaling more than $264,000, all of which accurately predicted the final ranking of the top five positions before the official announcement.
These accounts made profits estimated at around $200,000, which the platform considered an abnormal pattern indicating prior knowledge of the results.
France Football confirmed in a brief statement that it is investigating the incident to determine whether there was a leak from within the voting committee or from the organizing team, emphasizing that the confidentiality of the results is the cornerstone of the award's credibility since its inception in 1956.
The magazine is expected to issue an official statement in the coming days after completing the preliminary investigations.
For their part, the organizers of the Ballon d'Or revealed that Harry Kane won by just 28 points over Kylian Mbappe, marking the fourth closest victory in the award's 70-year history, and the closest under the current system after the "Messi" and "Van Dijk" race in 2019 by a margin of seven points, with "Harry Kane" receiving 1055 points, while the French "Kylian Mbappe" received 1027 points, and the Spanish "Lamine Yamal" received 881 points.
Kane received first place on 40 ballots from 100 journalists, compared to 23 first-place votes for Mbappe. The voting system awards 15 points for first place, 12 for second, 10 for third, and then 8-7-5-4-3-2-1 for the remaining positions.
Vincent Garcia, the editor-in-chief of France Football, explained that "Mbappe" was leading for a long time during the voting, before "Kane" came back and clinched it in the end by a very narrow margin.
With this, "Kane" becomes the first Englishman to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001, after a season in which he scored 73 goals with Bayern and the England national team, leading Bayern to a domestic treble.
