The Asian Football Confederation has dropped an organizational bombshell by adding new clauses to its regulations that prevent clubs under the ownership and control of a single entity from participating in the same competition, starting from the 2027-2028 season. This decision puts the situation of Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli, all under one owner, in the spotlight and opens the door to new scenarios for continental participation and a rapid transition to new owners, similar to Al-Hilal.
The update in Article 8 aims to prevent any substantial risk to the integrity of the competition:
Article 8.4: Ownership, membership, or participation in the management or control of another club participating in the same competition is prohibited when there is a risk to integrity.
Article 8.5: No individual or entity may participate in the management, affairs, or sporting performance of more than one club in the same competition.
Article 8.6: No individual or entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in the same competition if there is a substantial risk to integrity.
