The star of the Saudi national team and its captain, goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, led the team to finish "Gulf 27" with an exceptional defensive achievement, as the "Green" team crowned themselves champions in the final against the UAE, without conceding a single goal, in a series that placed the goalkeeper and the Saudi defense in a position to write a rare number in the history of the Arabian Gulf Cup.
The Green team played five matches in the current edition, starting with a victory over Kuwait with a score of one goal to none, then defeating Oman with a clean three-goal win and Iraq with two goals to none, before facing Qatar in the semi-finals and also exiting with a clean sheet, after a match that extended to 120 minutes, which the Green team ultimately decided in a penalty shootout.
Thus, the Saudi national team played 480 minutes in Gulf 27 without conceding any goals. The significance of the Saudi team's numbers increased when looking back at the history of recent editions of the Gulf Cup, as the group stage and knockout rounds system requires the champion to play a larger number of matches, including the semi-final and final, making it extremely difficult to reach the cup without conceding any goals.
The Green team succeeded in keeping a clean sheet against the UAE and winning the title, achieving an exceptional milestone in the history of the tournament under its modern format, having reached the final without conceding any goals, despite playing an additional 120 minutes against Qatar in the semi-finals. The achievement is not only about the number of "clean sheets," as Saudi Arabia never trailed throughout the tournament while being forced to chase a result due to a goal in their net, and no opponent succeeded in breaking the Green team's defensive organization over the course of 480 minutes.
