Saudi national team coach Donis confirmed that addressing the issue of missed opportunities in front of the goal begins with players gaining more calmness and confidence, and making the right decision at the right moment, emphasizing that the coaching staff needs time to develop the performance of the Green team, given the short gathering periods and the difficulty of making significant changes in just a few days.
Donis said, in response to a question from "Okaz" about how to address the issue of missed opportunities: "When we analyze our performance, it is important to see the situations better and make the right decision. Sometimes we do not make the appropriate decision, and what is most important for us is to gain calmness and confidence, and then we will automatically see the situations better, and our movements inside the penalty area will improve."
He added: "We need to bring more players into the penalty area and improve the final touch. It is good that we continue to create opportunities, and today we took a step in this regard, and I hope we develop step by step."
"The numbers say we dominated"
Donis relied on the match statistics to evaluate the performance of the Green team, saying: "When we analyze the match, the statistics say that the Saudi national team created more than 20 attacks, earned nearly 20 corner kicks, and had a possession rate of over 70%, which means we dominated the match."
He added: "We have quality and we possess good players, but we need to improve our decisions in attacking areas, whether in the final pass, the final cross, or movements inside the penalty area."
He emphasized that creating a large number of opportunities is not the goal in itself, saying: "We do not need 20 corner kicks or 20 attacks to win. Sometimes in balanced matches, you only get five opportunities, and you must capitalize on them to achieve victory."
"Miracles cannot be made in days"
Donis revealed one of the main challenges facing the coaching staff, which is the limited time available to work with the players during national team gatherings.
He said: "If we want to analyze the situation, this is almost my seventh match with the national team. Before this match, we worked together for only five days, and the Al-Ahli players joined us two days before the match."
He added: "It is very difficult for national team coaches to create miracles during this short period."
Donis confirmed that the coaching staff will continue to work to gradually develop the national team, pointing out that short preparation periods require maximizing the benefit from every gathering to reach the desired level.
"Friendlies gave fans hope"
Donis touched on his long experience in Saudi football and his understanding of the fans' expectations towards the national team, saying: "I live in Saudi Arabia and I know well how the expectations were before the World Cup, but the national team, through its level in the friendly matches that preceded the tournament, gave people hope, and then everyone began to believe in its capabilities."
He pointed out that the national team performed well during the preparations, explaining: "In the friendly matches against Senegal, Ecuador, and Puerto Rico, the team was, in my opinion, very good, but the challenge was in transferring that to official matches."
He added that the coaching staff's goal at this stage is to continue working hard and gradually improve performance, which helps players present more stable levels in official matches.
"Don't try to prove anything"
The Green coach revealed his keenness to speak directly with the players and give them confidence, especially with the varying participation of players with their clubs and the different positions they occupy.
Donis said about his conversation with one of his players: "I told him: Don't try to prove anything. Be calm and execute what the coach asks of you. We give players confidence, and in the first step, he was very, very good."
He explained that some national team players do not participate regularly with their clubs, while others play in different positions, which makes the coaching staff deal with varying levels of match readiness.
A mix of youth and experience
Donis revealed his desire to build a team that combines the vitality of young players and the experience of older players, saying: "We now have a mixed generation, and as a coach, I am trying to lower the average age and give some young players the opportunity to add more strength and intensity, in addition to benefiting from experience, and we are trying to find harmony among everyone."
Regarding the bench, he added: "We have a good group with quality, and some players provide us with balance, while others offer different characteristics when they come off the bench."
He confirmed that the pressure of matches will necessitate rotation, saying: "It is not easy to play every three days, so we have to make changes from one match to another. I expect all players to be ready to help the team, and some players on the bench may start the next match."
Appreciation for the fans
Donis praised the support received by the Green team, saying: "The fans created a wonderful atmosphere for us and supported us from the first minute to the last minute, and we want this atmosphere to continue. It was the first match, and it was important for us to achieve victory."
He expressed his satisfaction with the effort put forth by the players, adding: "I have nothing to complain about regarding the players' attempts; they gave everything they had in terms of effort and intensity. Overall, we controlled the match well."
"We respect the opponent... and focus on what’s next"
Donis emphasized his respect for opponents and his confidence in his players' abilities, saying: "We respect the opponent, and we believe in the quality of our team, and now our focus is on the next match, to improve some aspects and achieve victory."
Regarding Nawaf's condition, the Green coach clarified that the player is suffering from a hand injury and not a head injury, confirming that they are awaiting the results of medical examinations to determine the extent of the injury, and if the problem is significant, the coaching staff will have to replace him.
Donis adheres to the principle of gradual development given the limited time he spends with the players, emphasizing that hard work, boosting confidence, and improving decisions and effectiveness in front of the goal represent the main areas of focus in the upcoming phase.
