عجز المنتخب السعودي عن التتويج في آخر 10 نسخ خاضها بعد لقبه الأخير عام 2003، رغم وصوله للنهائي 4 مرات، ويخوض الأخضر «خليجي 27» بمحاولته الـ11 لكسر أطول فترة صيام في تاريخه، إذ تناوبت 6 منتخبات على اللقب هي الكويت وقطر والإمارات وعُمان والبحرين والعراق.
وقع الأخضر في المجموعة الحديدية التي تضم عُمان والعراق والكويت، وهي مجموعة حصدت وحدها 19 لقباً من أصل 26، أي 73% من تاريخ البطولة، بينما تملك منتخبات المجموعة الثانية مجتمعة 7 ألقاب فقط.
