Between the artistic conviction of the coach and the ambitions of the player, the issue of sidelining some players on the bench remains one of the most controversial topics in the sports community. There are talents that have the ability to contribute, yet they remain absent from the scene for long periods without any significant participation, which raises questions about the reasons for this marginalization and its implications for the player and the team, as well as the optimal way to manage talents within the sports system.
In this regard, the sports-focused psychological consultant Dr. Badr Hussein told “Okaz” that sidelining some players and keeping them on the bench for long periods without giving them a real opportunity to participate is one of the negative phenomena witnessed by some sports teams. There are players with great technical abilities, but over time they turn into mere names on the team roster due to their limited participation or complete absence.
He continued that some coaches deliberately rely on a specific group of players throughout the season, either due to entrenched artistic convictions or excessive confidence in certain elements, which leads to the exclusion of other players from the competition circle, even if they have the ability to provide the required contribution. Moreover, the continuation of this approach deprives the team of benefiting from all its human resources and leads to many talents missing their opportunities for development and self-assertion.
Dr. Hussein clarified that sports fans are often the most observant of these cases, especially when it comes to a player who has previously shown outstanding performances or enjoys the trust of the supporters. When a player repeatedly misses matches without clear justifications, questions begin to arise, and criticisms directed at the coaching staff increase. Naturally, a fan seeks the best for their team and wants to see the best players on the field, and when they feel that an influential player is being ignored, it reflects on the level of fan satisfaction regarding the coach and their decisions.
He pointed out that the greatest impact falls on the player themselves, as continuous marginalization may leave deep psychological effects manifested in a decline in self-confidence, loss of motivation, and feelings of unappreciation. Over time, the player may enter a cycle of frustration that makes them less capable of contributing during training or when they get the chance to participate.
He added that the damage does not stop at the psychological aspect but extends to the technical and physical levels, as the player gradually loses the sensitivity to matches and the rhythm of competition. No matter how good the training is, it cannot compensate the player for the real interaction during official matches, which may lead to a decline in their level and difficulty in regaining full readiness when needed.
He emphasized that a successful coach is not only measured by the number of victories they achieve but also by their ability to manage all their players and benefit from their capabilities. The correct approach lies in continuous communication with the players, explaining the technical reasons related to participation, and providing everyone with fair opportunities based on clear criteria. Additionally, a well-thought-out rotation policy ensures the readiness of the entire team and creates a healthy competitive atmosphere that drives everyone to give their best.
Dr. Hussein reiterates that the bench should be a waiting station for opportunity, not a place to bury talents, as a creative player needs confidence above all else. When they receive the support and the right opportunity, they are capable of giving back to their team and making a difference on the field.
