The beginning of each sports season represents an exceptional phase filled with expectations and ambitions, as the eyes of the fans turn towards their teams with great hopes of achieving championships. With the technical, administrative, and player changes that clubs have witnessed, the atmosphere of anticipation and debate increases, making the kickoff a focal point of wide interest within the sports community and on social media platforms.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, a psychological consultant and sports affairs enthusiast, told “Okaz” that the state of anticipation and anxiety experienced by fans is a natural and expected phenomenon in light of the significant changes at the level of coaching staff and player rosters.
He explained that the emotional connection fans have with their clubs makes any change in the coach, the departure of influential players, or the signing of new elements raise questions about the team's ability to achieve harmony from the early rounds. These concerns multiply when expectations are high, especially for clubs competing for championships or seeking to compensate for the failures of previous seasons.
He indicated that the impact of changes varies from team to team; some clubs benefit from injecting new blood and artistic ideas that provide additional strength, while others need more time for technical and mental stability. He emphasized that judging the success or failure of any project at its inception is hasty, as building a cohesive team requires time, effort, and patience.
He pointed out that fans' anxiety is a natural psychological phenomenon that stems from passion and the desire to see the team in its best form. This anxiety transforms into anticipation mixed with hope while waiting for new signings and coaches to prove their ability to make a difference.
What do fans want?
Al-Ghamdi confirmed that fans are not only looking for championships but also for “a clearly defined project, convincing performance on the field, and administrative and technical stability.” He added: fans accept losses if they feel there is professional work and a future plan, but they reject confusion and the absence of vision.
How is stability achieved?
Successful management separates constructive criticism from emotional reactions. Continuous communication with fans and clarifying objectives provides a calm environment and enhances trust. Additionally, giving coaching staff enough time to work is one of the most important factors for success.
He warned that social media has raised the level of fan interaction, but it can also increase psychological pressure on players and coaches when discussions turn into hasty judgments or exaggerated criticism campaigns.
He concluded by affirming that the success of the season is not measured solely by initial results but by the clubs' ability to build a stable system that maintains its balance, urging fans to support their teams with a positive spirit and give new projects the necessary time.
