في وقت تتصاعد فيه الضغوط حول مستقبل قيادة الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم، دخل الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب على خط الجدل بتصريح حاد، محذراً من أن إبعاد رئيس «فيفا» جياني إنفانتينو قد يكون «خطأً فادحاً».
وقال ترمب، الثلاثاء، في منشور عبر منصة «تروث سوشيال»، إن الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم سيرتكب خطأ كبيراً إذا قرر، لأي سبب، استبدال إنفانتينو، واصفاً رئيس «فيفا» بأنه «رائع».
وأشاد الرئيس الأمريكي بالدور الذي لعبه إنفانتينو في تنظيم النسخة الأخيرة من كأس العالم، معتبراً أنها كانت «أنجح بطولة كأس عالم على الإطلاق»، ومؤكداً أن وجوده على رأس الاتحاد كان عاملاً مهماً في هذا النجاح.
ولم يكتف ترمب بالإشادة، بل ذهب إلى التحذير من تداعيات رحيل إنفانتينو، قائلاً إن البطولة لن تحقق المستوى نفسه من النجاح أو الأرباح في حال مغادرته منصبه.
وتأتي تصريحات ترمب في وقت يواجه فيه إنفانتينو ضغوطاً متزايدة من عدد من الاتحادات القارية الكبرى، من بينها الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم «يويفا»، والاتحاد الآسيوي، واتحاد أميركا الشمالية والوسطى والكاريبي «كونكاكاف».
وتتركز جانب من هذه الضغوط حول خطة مثيرة للجدل تتعلق ببيع حصة من الحقوق التجارية الخاصة بكأس العالم لمستثمرين من القطاع الخاص، وهي الخطوة التي أثارت تحفظات داخل أوساط كروية بارزة.
At a time when pressures are mounting around the future leadership of FIFA, U.S. President Donald Trump has entered the fray with a sharp statement, warning that removing FIFA President Gianni Infantino could be a "grave mistake."
Trump said on Tuesday in a post on the "Truth Social" platform that FIFA would make a big mistake if it decided, for any reason, to replace Infantino, describing the FIFA President as "fantastic."
The U.S. President praised the role Infantino played in organizing the latest World Cup, considering it "the most successful World Cup ever," and affirming that his presence at the helm of the federation was a significant factor in this success.
Trump did not stop at praise but went on to warn of the consequences of Infantino's departure, stating that the tournament would not achieve the same level of success or profits if he were to leave his position.
Trump's comments come at a time when Infantino is facing increasing pressure from several major continental federations, including UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF.
Some of this pressure centers around a controversial plan to sell a stake of the commercial rights to the World Cup to private investors, a move that has raised concerns within prominent football circles.
