FIFA Forward Enterprise.
The crisis at the International Football Federation (FIFA) continues to escalate following the rapid collapse of the controversial investment plan proposed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino; which aimed to sell shares of World Cup rights to external investors through a new commercial entity known as FIFA Forward Enterprise.
The plan, which was estimated to raise around $4.2 billion, sparked an unprecedented global outcry, prompting the federations of Europe, Asia, and South America to issue joint statements accusing Infantino of "betraying trust and prioritizing personal interests over the interests of the game."
The major continental federations; led by UEFA, the AFC, and CONMEBOL, considered that the manner in which the plan was passed - secretly, without consultations, and with a short acceptance deadline - represents a serious violation of governance and transparency principles, affirming that "the current leadership has lost the trust of the football family." The escalation reached the point where some European federations threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments, while others, such as the Norwegian Football Federation, called for Infantino's immediate resignation.
Despite this increasing pressure, Infantino received support from other federations; most notably the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and federations in South America, Mexico, and Argentina, which viewed FIFA's apology regarding the mismanagement of the issue as sufficient to move forward with internal reforms instead of ousting the president. However, this support did not hide the deep division within the global football system, as the crisis has come to be described as "the biggest test of Infantino's leadership since he took office."
International analyses indicate that this crisis could affect Infantino's chances of re-election during the 2027 cycle, especially after European federations announced a complete loss of trust, while legal entities warned of the possibility of taking action against FIFA due to what they described as a "mysterious and misleading deal."
