طالب عدد من المشرعين في الاتحادات الوطنية لكرة القدم في دول الاتحاد الأوروبي لجنة الأخلاقيات في «فيفا» بالتحقيق مع إنفانتينو، وما إذا كان ضغط إدارة ترمب قد ساهم في رفع الإيقاف عن اللاعب الأمريكي، إضافة إلى «انتهاكات أخرى محتملة للحياد السياسي»، مثل منح رئيس الولايات المتحدة جائزة «فيفا» للسلام.
ودخل البرلمان الأوروبي على خط الجدل الدائر بشأن قرار الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم «فيفا» إلغاء إيقاف المهاجم الأمريكي فولارين بالوغون، بعد تداول رسالة داخل البرلمان تدعو إلى فتح تحقيق حول ما إذا كانت ضغوط من الإدارة الأمريكية قد أثرت في قرار رفع عقوبة اللاعب.
وكان قد سُمح لبالوغون بالمشاركة في مواجهة الولايات المتحدة أمام بلجيكا في دور الـ16 من كأس العالم، رغم حصوله على بطاقة حمراء في المباراة السابقة، قبل أن يتلقى المنتخب الأمريكي هزيمة قاسية بنتيجة 4-1 ويودع البطولة.
وتصاعدت الأزمة بعدما أثارت تقارير عن تدخل الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب للضغط على «فيفا» من أجل مراجعة عقوبة بالوغون، وهو ما دفع البرلمان الأوروبي إلى المطالبة بالتحقق من مدى استقلالية القرار، وسط مخاوف من تعرض نزاهة البطولة للتأثير.
وبدأت الأزمة بقرار «فيفا» إلغاء عقوبة الإيقاف المفروضة على المهاجم الأمريكي، قبل أن تتصاعد الانتقادات مجدداً بسبب الأداء التحكيمي المثير للجدل للحكم الفرنسي فرانسوا ليتيكسييه خلال مباراة الأرجنتين ومصر.
وتأتي هذه التطورات في وقت يلوح في الأفق سباق انتخابات رئاسة الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم، المقرر إجراؤها في مارس القادم، على هامش أعمال الجمعية العمومية الـ77 لـ«فيفا».
وكان إنفانتينو قد أعلن بالفعل عزمه الترشح لولاية جديدة، بعد 11 عاماً قضاها على رأس أعلى هيئة كروية في العالم.
وقال أعضاء البرلمان الأوروبي باري أندروز ولارا وولترز ونيلز فوغلسانغ في بيان مشترك إن قرار «فيفا» بـ«تغيير قاعدة الإيقافات بسبب البطاقة الحمراء في منتصف البطولة يعد عاراً وتشويهاً للعدالة».
A number of lawmakers from national football associations in European Union countries have called on the ethics committee of FIFA to investigate Infantino, and whether pressure from the Trump administration contributed to lifting the suspension on the American player, in addition to "other potential violations of political neutrality," such as awarding the President of the United States the FIFA Peace Prize.
The European Parliament has entered the fray regarding FIFA's decision to lift the suspension of American striker Folarin Balogun, following the circulation of a letter within the parliament calling for an investigation into whether pressure from the U.S. administration influenced the decision to lift the player's penalty.
Balogun was allowed to participate in the U.S. match against Belgium in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, despite receiving a red card in the previous match, before the American team suffered a heavy defeat with a score of 4-1 and exited the tournament.
The crisis escalated after reports emerged about U.S. President Donald Trump's intervention to pressure FIFA to review Balogun's penalty, prompting the European Parliament to demand verification of the independence of the decision, amid concerns about the integrity of the tournament being compromised.
The crisis began with FIFA's decision to lift the suspension imposed on the American striker, before criticisms escalated again due to the controversial refereeing performance of French referee François Letexier during the match between Argentina and Egypt.
These developments come at a time when the race for the presidency of FIFA is looming, scheduled to take place next March during the 77th FIFA General Assembly.
Infantino had already announced his intention to run for another term after 11 years at the helm of the world's highest football authority.
Members of the European Parliament Barry Andrews, Lara Walters, and Niels Fuglsang stated in a joint statement that FIFA's decision to "change the red card suspension rule mid-tournament is a disgrace and a distortion of justice."
