طالب اللاعب محمد أبو الشامات، بمساندة المنتخب، بعد خروجه من مونديال 2026، إثر تعادله أمام الرأس الأخضر في ثالث مباريات دور المجموعات، مشيرًا إلى أن أغلب لاعبي الجيل الحالي ما زالوا في بداية مسيرتهم الدولية ويحتاجون إلى الدعم لا إلى القسوة.

يقدرون غضب وحزن الجماهير السعودية. وقال: «نعترف بأننا لم نحقق ما كنا نطمح إليه، فقد كانت تطلعاتنا أكبر بكثير، وسنعمل خلال الفترة القادمة على تطوير أنفسنا ومعالجة الأخطاء التي ظهرت في أدائنا ولا نبحث عن مبررات، وأنا شخصيًا أتحمل المسؤولية، وهذا درس سنتعلم منه لتحقيق الإنجازات في الاستحقاقات القادمة»، رافضاً ربط الجيل الحالي بإخفاقات الأجيال السابقة، وقال: «نحن نعمل من أجل الظهور المشرف في مثل هذه المحافل العالمية».
