Some individuals, from time to time, may exhibit narcissistic traits in certain situations in their lives, but the situation differs if this narcissism reaches the level of a personality disorder, which is diagnosed only when these traits are stable and persistent, negatively affecting the person's life or relationships.
Sports fields around the world are filled with players who display narcissistic behaviors, as their most prominent traits include ignoring the opinions of others, constantly seeking attention and praise, boasting and self-admiration, and an inability to empathize with others. This player may even go so far as to boast and admire themselves while exploiting those around them to achieve their personal goals.
The question remains: why do some players develop narcissistic personality disorder despite achieving fame and a good reputation in football?
In response to this question, psychological and social consultant Dr. Alfat Abdulaziz told "Okaz": "Narcissistic personality disorder is not limited to some players or celebrities; it extends to ordinary people as well. However, the narcissistic player in the world of football may be characterized by arrogance and excessive self-love, which is completely different from self-confidence and high social spirit. They always seek to highlight their individual performance at the expense of the team's performance, making this behavior a negative trait in the context of team sports. They usually look to attract the attention of fans and coaches, constantly trying to impose their opinions and belittle others, and may even seek to dominate the powers enjoyed by those around them."
She continued: "There are certain traits that characterize the narcissistic player, including a constant feeling of grandeur, meaning they live in exaggerated fantasies believing that no one is like them and that they deserve special treatment more than others. If their demands are not met, they become angry and always seek to use others to achieve their personal goals, without regard for their feelings or needs. They often feel jealous and believe that others are envious of them. Traits such as arrogance, superiority, and haughtiness are also evident. For example, on the field, they may insist on taking all free kicks and penalties every time, ignoring the coach's instructions even if their teammates have better opportunities."
She added: "There may be potential reasons for the development of a narcissistic personality, including biological or genetic factors, upbringing, such as excessive pampering or harsh criticism in childhood, and also life experiences such as neglect, disregard, or psychological trauma. This disorder can persist with the person over time, and they may become famous and gain a reputation, but within themselves, they live in a narcissistic world, which those around them may feel. Some may interact positively with them, while others may prefer to avoid them altogether."
She concluded her remarks by saying: "Narcissism in the world of football is a controversial and interesting topic because it causes some players, especially great celebrities, to exhibit arrogance, superiority, and haughtiness, all of which can fuel their narcissistic traits. If the player does not recognize the negative repercussions of narcissism, they will undoubtedly face many challenges and criticisms that may reach the level of problems within the team or with fans who may not hesitate to attack them via social media, tarnishing much of their reputation and diminishing their achievements, no matter how famous the player becomes."
