Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admitted that he lost his temper in an unexplainable way after being sent off following a heated exchange with a Liverpool fan after the home side's winning goal in stoppage time during the UEFA Champions League match on Wednesday.
The Argentine had watched his team equalize after being two goals down, but Virgil van Dijk scored a last-minute goal in the 92nd minute to hand Atletico a 3-2 defeat at the noisy Anfield stadium. Simeone appeared angry at a Liverpool fan behind the technical area, and he was ultimately sent off by Italian referee Maurizio Mariani.
Simeone later stated that he endured insults for 90 minutes, adding to Movistar: "There were insults throughout the match, but hey, I was the one who had to stay calm and endure everything, the insults, the gestures, and so on. (Liverpool) talked about putting on a good show, but they insult you throughout the match and you can't say anything because I'm the coach. My reaction to the insult is unexplainable, but you don't know what it's like to be insulted for 90 minutes non-stop. They keep insulting you, and with the tension, what happened happened. The referee told me he understands that, but I hope Liverpool improves; if they find out who did that, there should be consequences."
In response to a question during a later press conference about what exactly the fan said that made him lose his temper, Simeone said: "I won't go into the exact nature of the insult; I don't want to get into that discussion. I know what happened behind my team's bench; I can't solve society's problems. It's never good for us to react as coaches, is it? If we are being insulted throughout the match. When they scored the third goal, he insulted me; I'm human."
Simeone praised his team for their great comeback after conceding two goals in the first six minutes, but they responded with a brace from Marcos Llorente.
He stated: "We weren't lucky with the first goal, but with the spirit and quality of the players, we came back into the match, and with Llorente, who had a great game, we raised our level. The match was within our reach until that wonderful goal from Virgil that made us feel bitter."
