Alvaro Carerras, the left-back for Real Madrid, confirmed today, Tuesday, during his official presentation as a player for the royal team, that he "does not care about the numbers," and he expressed his comfort when asked at the press conference about the amount the royal club paid Benfica (50 million euros).
This figure makes him the second most expensive defender in the club's history, after Dean Huysen (59 million euros) and equal to Eder Militao.
Details of the financial agreement with Benfica were revealed, which was officially announced to the stock market committee on Monday.
Carerras confirmed that he is only focused on working to achieve success at Real Madrid.
He said, "I don't focus on that (financial amounts). I am completely confident in who I am and what I can offer. I don't care about the numbers; I am comfortable. Football today drives all of that."
He also explained how his transfer to Real Madrid took place, saying it was "long" because "in football, there is always a lot of talk." He clarified that throughout this entire process, he was focused on playing for Benfica at the highest possible level.
He added, "We had the World Cup challenge. It didn't go as we expected, and now one door closes to open a giant one. I am excited to face a season that will be great for everyone."
He said, "I was completely focused on Benfica. I had the World Cup, which was a project we had prepared well. We didn't finish the season as we wanted. That's what happened. Until the last day, I didn't know anything until everything became official. I am happy to be in Madrid and very excited."
He added, "This is a dream come true. Returning to my home. I have incredible experiences. I am very excited to face the challenges and look forward to starting."
When asked if Brazilians Roberto Carlos and Marcelo Vieira were his role models when he was a child playing in the lower age categories for Real Madrid, he was clear and answered yes.
He noted in his statements reported by the Spanish news agency: "Both have been my inspiration for many years. I spent three years and was able to see Marcelo up close. I was with Roberto, and it was very good. Both are my role models."
Regarding Angel Di Maria, who shared a locker room with him at Benfica, he said he spoke with him about Real Madrid (the Argentine's former team) and praised the World Cup champion with kind words.
He said, "I can't find words to describe him. He was a great companion on and off the field. He supported me and respected me. I am forever grateful to him and wish him good luck in his new phase, which will be very good for him."
He also acknowledged that he has already spoken with Xabi Alonso, who wished him good luck and congratulated him on signing with Real Madrid: "I will play in any position required. I will be there. I will do my best for this shirt."
