U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged today (Wednesday) that the war with Iran was one of the main reasons for the Republicans' loss in the midterm congressional elections, asserting that the decision to engage in it "was worth it" to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump commented on the election results, stating that blaming the war for the defeat "is largely correct," emphasizing that "Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons." He expressed his belief that it is possible to reach an understanding with the Democrats in the upcoming phase, saying: "I think I will likely come to an understanding with the Democrats."
In an attempt to explain his party's loss, Trump considered that the Republicans would have won if his name had been on the ballot, saying: "If I were a candidate in the election, we would have won," adding that the party failed to transfer the popularity of its supportive voters to its candidates.
In the context of the aftermath of the defeat, CBS News reported, citing informed sources, that Trump sought the opinions of several of his advisors regarding the continuation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in his position, following the losses suffered by the Republicans in the midterm elections.
The sources indicated that Trump raised questions about Hegseth's future during meetings with his advisors and phone calls, while other sources confirmed that he had not made a final decision to change the leadership of the department.
According to the network, some White House aides expected that U.S. Central Command Commander Admiral Brad Cooper and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Keen would bear some responsibility for the losses, given their prominent roles in advising on the war with Iran.
In an electoral development reflecting the extent of the shift in the balance of power, CNN predicted that Democratic candidate Kristina Hines would win the seat in Michigan's 10th congressional district after a heated electoral competition.
With this victory, the district will come under Democratic control for the first time in over 20 years, serving as an additional indicator of the electoral decline faced by the Republicans.
