In a new escalation before the American midterm elections, President Donald Trump announced his readiness to intervene to protect billionaire Elon Musk, the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla, if the Democrats decide to open investigations against him following the midterm elections scheduled for (Tuesday). He also hinted at the possibility of issuing pardons for several of his aides and allies in anticipation of potential political prosecutions or investigations.
Trump's statements come at a time when he is preparing for a fierce political battle during the last two years of his term, amid polls indicating the potential for significant electoral gains for the Democrats, which could shift the balance of power within Congress and increase pressure on the U.S. administration.
Trump: We will work to protect Elon Musk
In an interview with the podcast "Pod Force One," published early on (Monday), host Miranda Devine asked the president about reports and rumors regarding the possibility of Musk facing an investigation or having his assets subjected to seizure.
Trump responded, saying, "This is just talk, but if it's really on the table, we will have to protect them."
These statements come amid the close relationship between Trump and Musk, who has spent nearly half a billion dollars on political efforts aimed at opposing the Democrats during the current election cycle.
Musk recently stirred controversy after warning that a Democratic victory in the presidency and Congress in the 2028 elections could represent, as he described it, the end of democracy.
Possible pardons for Trump's aides and allies
Trump's statements were not limited to defending Musk; he also expressed a clear willingness to consider issuing pardons for his aides and close associates if the Democrats decide to pursue them through investigations or legal actions.
When asked if he would use his presidential powers to issue such pardons, Trump replied, "I will do that if I need to, for sure." He added, "I won't even think about it for long... I will do it."
These statements reflect Trump's readiness to engage in a political and legal confrontation with his Democratic opponents, should they manage to strengthen their influence within Congress following the midterm elections, and the potential consequences of opening files related to his administration and allies.
Trump talks about the dream of a third presidential term
In another part of the interview, Trump reiterated his desire to serve a third presidential term, stating that he would be happy to take on the experience, but he acknowledged that the U.S. Constitution is very clear and precise regarding presidential terms.
Despite referencing the constitutional limitations that prevent him from serving a third term, Trump emphasized that he has more than two years left to complete his political agenda, saying, "As you know, we still have more than two years, and that's a long time, and a lot can be accomplished during that period."
