The death toll from the attack launched by the Venezuelan army on a camp of Colombian leftist rebels within Venezuelan territory has risen to at least 19 people, according to a non-governmental organization and sources familiar with the operation.
Juan Francisco Garcia, the coordinator at the non-governmental organization "Fundaridis," explained that the attack targeted forces belonging to the "National Liberation Army" that were stationed in the border state of Apure, resulting in nine bodies being brought to San Fernando, the capital of the state, and later ten more bodies were recovered.
Local residents in the state of Apure confirmed that an attack by the army occurred on Friday, targeting fighters from the "National Liberation Army," resulting in casualties.
The "National Liberation Army" is considered the strongest rebel movement in Latin America since the "FARC" movement signed a peace agreement with the Bogotá government in 2016.
Colombia and Venezuela share a land border that exceeds two thousand kilometers (up to 2200 kilometers), where other rebel groups are also active, including factions that broke away from the "FARC" movement, which had rejected the peace agreement and are currently engaged in conflicts among themselves to control cocaine trafficking and illegal mining activities.
For years, the Bogotá government has accused Venezuela of providing a safe haven for Colombian rebels across this border, which has witnessed various operations for decades.
Venezuela is currently under scrutiny and control by the administration of Donald Trump following the ousting of President Nicolás Maduro, as the United States seeks to exploit Venezuela's vast oil wealth and other natural resources.
