Axios reported that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an unannounced visit to Israel, amid discussions about the possibility of resuming military operations against Iran.
The site reported on Monday, citing two knowledgeable sources, that the meeting took place eight days before the Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27, and at a time when Washington and Tel Aviv are considering options for the next phase of confrontation with Tehran.
Axios did not disclose details of the meeting or whether it resulted in any agreements regarding potential military action. No official comment has been issued by the U.S. Department of Defense or the Israeli Prime Minister's Office regarding the meeting, according to the site.
The visit comes days after a previous Axios report stated that U.S. President Donald Trump and Netanyahu discussed the possibility of launching a new large-scale military operation against Iran before the Israeli elections and the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November.
According to the report, Netanyahu expressed concern over what Israel described as Iranian steps to rebuild parts of its nuclear program, while both sides discussed the possibility of carrying out a joint operation targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites.
The report indicated that Hegseth and the U.S. Central Command leadership were among the most prominent supporters of resuming strikes, while other officials in the Trump administration preferred to continue economic pressure and sanctions at this stage.
However, the White House denied the accuracy of reports regarding discussions to resume the war, confirming that Trump does not intend to launch attacks on Iran before the U.S. midterm elections. No official announcement has been made confirming a decision to resume military operations.
Trump had previously stated that he would soon decide on the next steps regarding Iran, while the possibility of returning to military confrontation remains alongside diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a settlement.
This comes amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran regarding the Iranian nuclear program and regional security, with U.S. and Israeli forces remaining on standby for the possibility of resuming operations, according to U.S. media reports.
The developments gain additional significance with the approaching Israeli elections, as any military escalation could impact the internal political scene, in addition to the possibility of an Iranian response that could widen the confrontation in the region. However, the nature of any potential action and its timing remain uncertain, in the absence of an official announcement regarding a new military decision.
