The European Union has considered that "the time is not right" to stop aiding Ukraine and to lift sanctions on Russia, in a position that supports Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as tensions rise with Washington.
European Council President Antonio Costa told the media, alongside Zelensky upon their arrival at the EU leaders' summit in Brussels on Friday, "This is not the time to withdraw support for Ukraine. This is not the time to ease sanctions imposed on Russia. He emphasized that it is the right time to increase our support and increase our pressure; you can count on us." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that "there is one thing that is absolutely clear: we will not lift any sanctions as long as Russia does not stop the war." The Ukrainian president joined EU leaders on Friday, the last day of the EU summit held in Brussels. Zelensky, who had already arrived in Brussels on Thursday, received a flood of support from EU leaders in response to repeated criticisms from Washington. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on "X" shortly after Zelensky's plane landed in the Belgian capital: "You are not alone." President Donald Trump had called for Zelensky's replacement, announcing plans to purchase hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel from Russia. According to Kyiv, the United States has reduced its intelligence-sharing with Ukraine and restricted the operation of the "Starlink" satellite internet service. EU leaders are not expected to make extensive commitments at the Brussels summit beyond words of encouragement. The EU has approved a loan program to support Kyiv worth 90 billion euros for 2026 and 2027, amid calls for Ukraine's international allies to increase their funding. Ukraine heavily relies on American support, including intelligence for air defense and the "Starlink" satellite internet service. Zelensky has complained about gaps in intelligence sharing and internet restrictions, which he said have caused failures in Ukrainian drone operations.
