From the stands of Al-Ahli and my love for its matches since childhood, to the treasury, then the general secretariat, to working in the Saudi Football Federation, culminating in the presidency of the club; it has been a long journey that the former president of Al-Ahli, Abdulilah Mo'menah, has lived between the stands, administrative work, and decision-making.
In this interview, Mo'menah recalls the beginnings of his relationship with Al-Ahli, his meetings with its symbols, the "triple" milestone, his transition to working in the Football Federation, and ultimately to the presidency of the club. He also opens up files from his management period, which was accompanied by exceptional circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as public and media pressures, his relationship with the players, and the discussions surrounding the locker room and attempts to influence it.
Mo'menah talks about individuals he said aspired to the presidency, and about the role of the media, influencers, and fake accounts, confirming that he preferred to step back and resign when he saw that it was in the best interest of Al-Ahli.
He also addresses files concerning Mohammed Al-Owais, Omar Al-Soma, and Janini, the winter transfers, financial commitments, and governance, before moving on to the current state of Al-Ahli, the departure of Matthias Jaissle, the team's chances in the competition, and the future of the national team, Saudi football, and the academies and youth players... Here is the text of the interview:
From the stands to the presidency
• From the stands to the presidency... How did your relationship with Al-Ahli begin?
•• It wasn't planned. Since childhood, I have never missed an Al-Ahli match, and I never imagined that I would be part of this great entity. We were close to the club and lived the joys of its championships, and during 2007 and 2008, I got to know some great Al-Ahli figures.
I realized that the club needed different specialties, including the financial field, so I applied for the treasury position. I wasn't successful in the first attempt, and in the second, I met Dr. Ayman Fadel without joining his administration, until Abdulaziz Al-Anqari's administration came looking for a financial specialist, and at that time, I was licensed by the Capital Market Authority, so I joined. It was my first experience, and I transitioned from being a fan to a responsible person. I made sure to get close to the symbols of Al-Ahli; I met Prince Mohammed Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal, may he rest in peace, and then Prince Khalid bin Abdullah on several occasions. I served as treasurer with Al-Anqari for a year, then stepped back and returned in 2016 as the general secretary with Musaed Al-Zuwahiri during the historic triple season.
The presidency did not come directly, but in sequence... from the treasury to the general secretariat, then to the Saudi Football Federation as a financial manager and then as a general secretary, during which we qualified for the World Cup, and after that, I was honored to return as president of Al-Ahli.
Sports differ from corporate environments
• Given your proximity to Al-Ahli before the presidency, what changed in your perspective after you reached the president's chair?
•• Sports work is completely different from work in companies; it’s not just about management and numbers, but rather a unique sports experience, regulations, and a different environment. In football, the technical aspect is the primary influence, and all files are linked to the results of the first team. You may succeed in governance, organization, and financial aspects, but your final evaluation remains tied to what the team presents on the field, and here lies the challenge... how to achieve balance in an environment that requires a different approach.
The board of directors was the decision-maker
• Were you the decision-maker at Al-Ahli, or were there names with more influence than you?
•• No, the board of directors, in general, was the decision-maker. There was clear support and direction from the Ministry of Sports towards governance and procedures, and the situation was no longer as it was before when members of honor had direct decisions. There was a different administrative arrangement.
Al-Ahli is the dream of my life... and a club in my blood
• You said after your departure, "If I could turn back time, I would think 50 times before taking the presidency of Al-Ahli"... what did you experience that led you to say that?
•• The matter is different... you are not just a president; you are, in the end, a fan, and I love something called Al-Ahli, today and tomorrow. My family, my children, and my life are tied to it. It is one of the most beautiful stages of my life, and Al-Ahli is a great club connected to a fan base of different ages and cultures, so you have to consider all these factors.
The locker room is under control
• At one point, disagreements reached the locker room. Did you feel that some players turned against the management?
•• No, the word "turned" is not the correct phrase... you may have disagreements with players, but the circumstances in general were exceptional for all clubs during that period; there was the issue of salary reductions, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other matters. Initially, our results were excellent, and in the latter part of the season, things started to differ slightly. We did not have the significant support that exists now, nor even the support that those who came after us received, and we were in very difficult circumstances; however, I cannot describe the situation as the players doing something unacceptable. On the contrary, even my departure or resignation was well-known, and the locker room was organized and under control.
Confronting players? Not true
• At that time, it was reported that a confrontation occurred between you and the players, and that one player left the locker room... what happened?
•• Not true... this is one of the rumors circulating in the sports community. Some things may happen sometimes, but when we talk about a club like Al-Ahli, it has a special status and a specific mechanism. There is a football director who deals directly with the players, and it is not normal for a player to confront the club president directly. However, in the end, our results in the recent period were not good.
Al-Owais... "is protective of the team"
• Did you feel that some players, especially Mohammed Al-Owais, were saying truths that the management could not express?
•• No... Mohammed Al-Owais is one of the sports personalities with whom I still have a relationship, and he is protective of the team. He is one of the influential players in the locker room, and when he made his statement, it was after the team started losing some points. I do not believe that his statement contained any offense; he was talking about the fact that we need some things, and this is the language of Mohammed even now. There was nothing personal against me, but they were discussing specific circumstances.
Perhaps we were not successful in the winter period regarding some technical additions, and this reflected on the players, especially since the options in the winter period were somewhat limited.
"Some aspired to the presidency chair"
• After your departure, it was raised that some individuals tried to influence the players... who are these people? How did they reach them?
•• Unfortunately, during that phase, there were those who sought their own interests, some wanted the presidency chair, and others had different goals. They tried to exploit the difficult circumstances that the club was going through. My decision was in the best interest of Al-Ahli first, and thank God I left the club in a good financial, administrative, and organizational position. I will not get into names and will reserve some actions, but there were open attempts to influence the players by media figures, influencers, and athletes, and God exposed them. The Al-Ahli fans today know well who was meddling during that period.
Personally, I have moved past that phase, and whenever I talk about Al-Ahli, I do not like to return to negative matters; because the sports history I achieved with Al-Ahli, thank God, is enough for me, and it is a source of happiness for me. Yes, there were individuals who worked on a specific matter, and they had a specific desire, and they aspired to the presidency. I believe they were exposed in front of the public, and I am not one of those who use fake accounts, nor do I work on Twitter. On the contrary, I am an Al-Ahli fan, Al-Ahli fan, Al-Ahli fan, and anything that serves Al-Ahli's interest, I will do today, tomorrow, and later. My history, thank God, with Al-Ahli is a great history that I cherish, and this is the foundation. As for those who tried to conspire or act, I believe that time has proven that.
Files of the professionals... "ended with their good and bad"
• Who was behind the contracts and deals of Al-Ahli? Was it just a financial matter, or was there something else happening?
•• These matters ended with their good and bad. Perhaps my memory does not serve me well, and if we went back to old files, perhaps even the fans now do not care about them. Our club, in reality, achieved two championships, and the team is very beautiful, and I believe that this is the most important thing, not the small details.
What is the biggest financial or administrative mistake that happened during your tenure that you say today: "This is my mistake, and I take responsibility for it"?
We did not have financial mistakes in the club, and there were sports decisions in which we were not successful, including some transfers.
As for administrative and financial matters, thank God, we were number one in governance and procedures, and this is the nature of sports clubs in general.
Payne Jang... "we were not successful in the deal"
• What about the deal for player Payne Jang? Who brought him to Al-Ahli; you, the coach, or the club management?
•• First of all, sports options in January are always limited. The player was offered to us and was recommended by the technical committee, but we were not successful with him. Many of the deals were difficult in timing, and we were not successful in them as a club. We also aspired to contract with a defender. I remember we were close to an Iraqi defender, but whenever we reached a certain stage, we were not successful. In some cases, there were those who tried to hinder the deals. We were not successful in January, and we entered the winter phase with only one player, and this is one of the matters that, in reality, was not successful in general.
"No personal conflict with Al-Soma"
• Regarding Al-Soma... how did the renewal turn into a departure?
•• Absolutely, there was no personal conflict between me and him. "Omar" is a great player and dear to me. We shared the joy of the triple in 2016, but football has its requirements, and the player has roles on the field only. Beyond that, it was not required. There may be work-related differences, and this is normal, but the ending that happened was not something anyone wished for Omar or Al-Ahli. It was God's will, and what He willed happened.
"I resigned for the sake of Al-Ahli"
• How do you explain the organized attack that your administration faced?
•• In short... the presidency of Al-Ahli is tempting, and everyone wants it. During our time, all circumstances came together against us: media, influencers, and public pressures at an exceptional time. There were those whose intention was to serve Al-Ahli, and there were those who used platforms to undermine stability to achieve their dreams. I am a son of Al-Ahli, and this club is the dream of my life, so I preferred to exit quietly to preserve it. I am not skilled at the game of directing Twitter or creating men of the stage or buying media voices on occasions. The media may elevate you for days, but what keeps you is the field and results only, and perhaps this is my weakness; I did not play that game because what matters to me is Al-Ahli, not my staying. The history of Al-Ahli is greater than to be tied to one person. It was a short and difficult period during the COVID-19 era. Technically, we were better than many previous seasons, and the issue of contract terminations was a global crisis experienced by all clubs, not just Al-Ahli.
"The departure of Jaissle"
• After the dismissal of Jaissle at this timing... do you think Al-Ahli will be affected technically?
•• The timing is the real crisis. The decision to dismiss a coach two weeks before the season puts any incoming coach under immense pressure. Jaissle is a beloved coach and has left a clear mark. The achievement of the last season is credited to him, the players, and the management together. However, Al-Ahli is a strong and cohesive team that only needs minor adjustments to return to its path.
"Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli are contenders... and Al-Qadisiyah is strong"
• Is Al-Ahli capable of competing, and what does it lack?
•• Al-Ahli is capable, but the truth is that it lost its balance with the departure of key pillars. When you lose Mahrez, Kessie, and a full-back of the caliber you had, and do not replace them with the same quality, it is natural for the team to become unbalanced. The league is a long marathon. Al-Hilal has strengthened with a host of stars, and its start reflects that; it is the first contender. However, Al-Ahli remains a contender if it overcomes the initial hurdle. And let’s not forget that Al-Qadisiyah is a strong team this season. But let’s be realistic; any coach thrown into this difficult timing will fight under immense pressure, without time and without preparation.
• What do you expect from the Saudi Federation in the new phase?
•• Winning the Gulf Cup came at the right time. The new federation has only been in place for a month, but the academy project is the most important. With the support of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, the Kingdom is set to host major tournaments. We hope this championship will be the beginning of a comeback, and we have an important participation in the AFC Asian Cup. God willing, Saudi football will return to its strength as it was in the 90s and the millennium.
