The Wall Street Journal revealed that the federal investigation being conducted by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump into Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar aims to build a case that could lead to her being stripped of her U.S. citizenship and deported, with a key aspect of the investigation focusing on her birth date and the documents her late father submitted to obtain citizenship.
According to the newspaper, officials are investigating the possibility that Omar or her father provided incorrect information on immigration papers, particularly regarding her age when her father obtained citizenship in 2000. The case revolves around whether she was 17 years old, which would qualify her to acquire citizenship through her father, or whether she was 18 at that time.
In a notable development, federal agents searched Omar's home in Washington last Monday under a court order, seizing, according to informed sources, her mobile phone, notebooks, computers, and her passport. Some of her family members also received subpoenas from a grand jury related to the investigation.
Omar arrived in the United States in 1995 after leaving Somalia due to the civil war, spending four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. She obtained U.S. citizenship in 2000 through her father's naturalization. Allegations regarding her birth year have sparked controversy for years, especially after her birth year was changed in some public records from 1981 to 1982. The representative has denied the accusations, describing them as "baseless lies and smear campaigns," considering the investigation an attempt to target political opponents and weaponize law enforcement against them.
Simultaneously, Omar is undergoing a separate financial investigation regarding her asset and wealth declarations, after previous documents revealed that she and her husband owned assets valued between $6 million and $30 million, later amended to between $18,000 and $95,000, attributing the discrepancy to an accounting error. The investigations could lead to fraud charges or civil actions to revoke citizenship if it is proven to have been obtained illegally. However, the allegations are still under investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced against Omar in the case.
