Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to mediate between Iran and the United States. The Russian news agency "Interfax" reported from the Kremlin that Putin conveyed Iran's position regarding a potential resolution to the conflict in the Middle East during his phone call with Trump, with support from Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian.
The Russian agency reported that Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "In coordination with the Iranian president, Putin conveyed to Trump the Iranian side's perspective on a possible resolution to the conflict."
Since the United States and Israel launched their first strikes on Iran at the end of February, attempts to reach an agreement to end the crisis have collided with the issue of high-enriched uranium stockpiles.
The two leaders had a phone conversation that lasted about an hour and a half, which included a Russian proposal to resolve the "Iranian enriched uranium" crisis that Washington demands Tehran eliminate. Putin informed Trump that "Moscow's offer to transfer Iranian enriched uranium to Russia is still on the table."
For his part, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Putin emphasized that diplomatic options regarding the Iranian file have by no means been exhausted, as it is possible, and indeed necessary, to reach an agreement with Tehran through negotiations.
According to the Russian official: "Trump took the initiative to warmly congratulate Putin on his birthday, wishing him success and good health. He made sure to convey greetings from his wife Melania," and "they expressed their satisfaction with the existing communication channels between the two countries through the presidential administrations, intelligence agencies, and other relevant agencies."
He added that the possibility of resuming trilateral talks involving the United States and Ukraine was discussed during the previous conversation between the two presidents, with the potential to resume negotiations directly after the Russian State Duma elections, but he noted that "the situation is different now."
He considered that Kyiv's attempts to obstruct the parliamentary elections in Russia have effectively undermined the possibility of resuming negotiations immediately, and as the president said, "we will consider when it would be possible to resume these negotiations."
Trump reached an agreement with Putin regarding diesel supplies, which is crucial in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, as rising fuel prices have led to a decline in Republican popularity ahead of the most important electoral challenge for the presidency over the next two years.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Putin informed Trump that Russia's position on the goals and objectives of its military operation has not changed, and it remains ready to reach a political and diplomatic settlement that achieves lasting and sustainable peace.
