As Iran faces increasing economic pressures with inflation reaching 90% and a U.S. naval blockade choking its oil exports, along with a decline in its control over the Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump has sent an aircraft carrier and 10,000 troops to the region, amid prospects of military escalation following the upcoming midterm elections in November, against the backdrop of a stalled diplomatic path.
An Iranian official admitted to Bloomberg that the economic situation is "extremely painful," but the country is adapting to it. He stated that Iran is preparing for a new U.S. bombing campaign that could be larger than the previous one, but it has the capability to respond, according to him.
Bloomberg reported that Iranian officials confirmed that the chances of reaching a peace agreement before the congressional elections are limited, and they believe there is a significant likelihood of escalation afterward. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Friday its readiness to deliver a "swift, painful, and regretful response" to any U.S. or Israeli aggression. Axios revealed that senior members of President Trump's team held a meeting on Friday that lasted several hours at the Camp David presidential retreat to discuss the next steps regarding Iran and the situation in Yemen. The meeting was chaired by Vice President J.D. Vance and included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine. An American official stated that decisions were made on the matter, or at least discussed in depth.
While Iran's grip on Hormuz has weakened, tanker tracking data collected by Bloomberg revealed an increase in oil exports from the Gulf through the strait in September. JPMorgan estimated that crude oil shipments from the Middle East have recovered to 17.5 million barrels per day, which is equivalent to 98% of pre-war levels. An energy sector official in the region confirmed that Tehran's grip is declining despite repeated targeting of ships. A crude oil tanker was hit by a projectile on Saturday in the Strait of Hormuz, about 4 miles off the coast of Oman, according to the British Maritime Trade Operations.
Trump has once again shown readiness to proceed with a military escalation policy as the midterm elections approach. Trump stated that delivering stronger strikes against Iran after the November 3 vote is "possible," and with the arrival of the "Theodore Roosevelt," the number of U.S. aircraft carriers in the region will rise to three, a buildup not seen since the initial phase of the Iraq invasion in 2003.
