In a new field development that may complicate the conflict in northern Ethiopia, Ethiopian federal forces have regained control of the main airport in the city of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, according to Reuters citing three sources, in a significant blow to the opposition alliance that has made the region its stronghold.
The recovery of the airport coincided with ongoing battles between an armed alliance led by the Tigray People's Liberation Front and government forces and their allies, marking the most dangerous escalation in the region since the end of the Ethiopian civil war that lasted from 2020 to 2022.
The Ethiopian Army Regains Mekelle Airport
A source familiar with developments in the city stated that Ethiopian army forces regained control of the Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle, while a resident of the city confirmed that government forces had taken back the airport, noting that he could hear gunfire outside the city center.
The source added that he saw some Tigray Defense Forces fighters leaving their positions and heading home, and he mentioned incidents of looting of government facilities within the city.
In contrast, a source close to the front said that the city of Mekelle has become besieged by government forces and allied militias.
Concerns About the Expansion of the Conflict
The recent battles raise fears that the escalation in Tigray could turn into a broader regional conflict, potentially affecting neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf region.
The federal government in Addis Ababa announced this week the severing of diplomatic relations with Eritrea, accusing it of supporting the opposition alliance alongside Sudan and Egypt. The three countries deny these accusations.
Egypt Responds to the African Union
Egypt condemned the recent statement issued by the African Union Commission regarding what it described as escalating tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt. An informed Egyptian source expressed deep astonishment, asserting that Cairo finds it incomprehensible to be dragged into the internal Ethiopian issue.
The source emphasized that Egypt takes pride in its African identity and being one of the founding countries of the African Union, explaining that Egypt's foreign policy is based on the principles of international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, including respect for the sovereignty of states, non-interference in internal affairs, and commitment to good neighborliness.
He added that the current crisis in Ethiopia is an internal issue with no relation to Egypt, stressing that one should not be swayed by attempts to divert attention from the true internal motivations behind what is happening in Ethiopia.
The source affirmed that such moves will not help in calming the situation in a sister African country that needs the support of the African Commission to emerge from the cycles of chronic conflicts it suffers from.
The source noted that Egypt continues its commitment to working diligently in coordination with its African brothers to meet the legitimate aspirations of the peoples of the continent for the promotion of peace and security and the enhancement of economic and investment partnerships, to achieve a better future that brings dignity, prosperity, and growth to African countries.
These statements from Egypt came following a statement from the African Union Commission regarding what it described as escalating tensions between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt.
The African Union Commission called on the three countries to exercise the utmost restraint and refrain from any actions or statements that could escalate tensions and threaten regional peace and stability, while keeping communication channels open and resolving disputes through diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue.
The Commission confirmed its readiness to support efforts to de-escalate and dialogue among the concerned parties.
Clashes in Ethiopia
The current clashes erupted last week between a rebel alliance led by the ruling front in Tigray and government forces and their allies, marking the most dangerous wave of violence in the region since the war that occurred between 2020 and 2022.
Mekelle Airport as a Strategic Target
Mekelle Airport, named Alula Aba Nega, is located about 10 kilometers from the city center.
The airport was one of three airports in the region seized by opposition forces at the beginning of the fighting on September 23.
The recovery of control over Mekelle by government forces, if fully confirmed, represents a significant setback for the opposition alliance, but analysts believe that controlling the city will not necessarily be sufficient to end the conflict.
The city of Mekelle holds great importance in the history of the previous war; in 2020, federal forces managed to seize the city during the first month of the two-year war, before the Tigray People's Liberation Front was able to retake it after seven months.
The current developments come amid increasing fears of a return to large-scale conflict in the region, following years of war that left a widespread humanitarian crisis, while the new escalation raises concerns about the potential spillover effects beyond Ethiopian borders.
