وقال روبيو في برنامج «توداي» على شبكة «إن بي سي نيوز»: «منفتحون على ذلك، لا أعتقد أن هناك أي شيء مقرر في الوقت الحالي، لكننا بالتأكيد منفتحون على مثل هذا الأمر، خصوصاً إذا كان من شأنه أن يفضي إلى نتيجة إيجابية، ويحقق الهدف المنشود في النهاية»، مبينًا أن الهدف هو ألا تستطيع إيران أن تمتلك سلاحًا نوويًا أبداً. وشدد روبيو بالقول: «ببساطة، لا يمكنها ذلك».}
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed today (Tuesday) his desire to meet with Iranian officials present in New York if the conditions are favorable.
CNN reported that a knowledgeable U.S. official said President Trump informed his advisors of his wish to arrange a meeting with Iranian officials in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, "if the conditions are favorable."
The source clarified that such a meeting could also involve some of the president's senior advisors accompanying him in New York, although no date for any meeting had been set as of this afternoon. It was noted that there are doubts about whether the officials present in New York enjoy the trust of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, who is viewed as having the final decision-making authority.
The official added that it is also unclear whether the Iranian side is open to the idea of holding such a meeting.
The Iranian delegation in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly is led by Iranian President Masoud Bezhaskian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
Earlier today, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is open to dialogue with the Iranians at the United Nations General Assembly, denying that any meeting is currently scheduled.
Rubio said on NBC News' "Today" program: "We are open to that; I don't think there is anything scheduled at this time, but we are certainly open to such a thing, especially if it could lead to a positive outcome and ultimately achieve the desired goal," indicating that the goal is for Iran to never be able to possess nuclear weapons. Rubio emphasized by saying: "Simply put, they cannot."}
