Ramzan Kadyrov, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been re-elected for a fifth term as head of the Chechen Republic, after the Russian Central Election Commission announced today (Monday) that he received 99.85% of the votes.
Kadyrov's re-election comes at the conclusion of Russian elections that included the State Duma, regional legislative councils, and elections for governors in several areas, amid the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine for nearly five years. These elections showed significant gains for candidates and parties supported by the Kremlin.
In Chechnya, the percentage of votes Kadyrov received increased slightly compared to the 2021 elections, when he garnered 99.73% of the votes. The elections in the North Caucasus republic have faced criticism from international observers in previous elections, while Kadyrov rejects these criticisms, describing them as Western-backed attempts to undermine his rule.
Kadyrov's continued leadership in Chechnya is linked to his close relationship with Putin, as he enjoys a wide margin of independence in managing the affairs of the republic, in exchange for maintaining stability in a region that experienced armed rebellion against Moscow during the 1990s and the early 2000s.
Kadyrov also repeatedly declares his personal loyalty to the Russian president and adopts a hardline stance on the war in Ukraine, confirming the participation of Chechen forces in the fighting since the war began in 2022.
Kadyrov came to power after the assassination of his father, Akhmad Kadyrov, in a bombing carried out by Chechen rebels in 2004, after they considered him to be outside their ranks. Since taking office, his government has faced repeated accusations from human rights organizations of committing widespread human rights violations, which Kadyrov denies.
The election results in Chechnya reflect the continued dominance of the current leadership over the political landscape in the republic, coinciding with results that showed the hegemony of Kremlin-backed political forces in the recent Russian elections, amidst a significant absence of candidates opposing the war in Ukraine.
