The Palestinian Vice President Hussein Sheikh announced that the Palestinian elections will take place as scheduled on the twenty-eighth of November, emphasizing that there will be no elections without the Gaza Strip. He confirmed that there is a need for national consensus to ensure their conduct in the sector.
Sheikh stated during a meeting with journalists today (Saturday) that the elections represent the only path to maintain political references and national unity, pointing out that if the legislative council elections are prevented, there will be a move towards forming a Palestinian National Council by consensus.
He affirmed that Fatah Movement will participate in the elections under its name, and that the Palestinian leadership is concerned with continuing internal dialogue and is open to discussions with everyone, noting an anticipated visit to Egypt in this context.
Regarding the Israeli issue, Sheikh said that the Palestinian Authority is monitoring the Israeli elections, and that the re-establishment of the current government will make it difficult to continue the same Palestinian policy. He added that the leadership is monitoring the American midterm elections and hopes that the results will lead to political change.
Sheikh revealed a calm dialogue with the American administration to discuss a framework for a memorandum of understanding, stating that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the overseeing and interested party in the reform file within the Palestinian Authority.
On the financial front, Sheikh disclosed that the Authority's debts amount to 17 billion dollars, while the Palestinian funds confiscated or held by Israel are around 7 billion dollars.
He said that settlers now control 100% of Area C, confirming, on the other hand, that there is no intention from the Authority to engage in armed confrontation with the settlers, but rather to support peaceful popular resistance. He emphasized that what is required in the coming phase is to endure for the next 4 months.
