Amid the stalled negotiations and the lack of clear indicators for reaching an agreement to extend the ceasefire or end the war, the "fragile truce" between the United States and Iran faces the risk of collapse as its expiration date approaches tomorrow, Monday.
A senior official in the White House described the situation as "stagnant," noting that Tehran has not yet shown sufficient willingness to return to the negotiating table, as reported by Politico magazine.
Disagreements on Several Issues
The disagreements between the two sides revolve around several issues, most notably the fate of frozen Iranian assets, the movement of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. maritime blockade imposed on Iran. In contrast, both sides believe that continuing the truce and the blockade may be less costly than returning to military escalation.
If the deadline passes without reaching an agreement, the stalemate will continue against the backdrop of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections scheduled for less than three months, which will be decided by voters exhausted by the war and weary of its repercussions.
The White House hopes that the economic pressure campaign, driven by threats of imposing an open U.S. blockade on Iranian shores, will be sufficient to push Tehran back to the negotiating table.
Tehran Expands Its Demands
Iran has raised the bar on its demands in recent days, calling for compensation for the damages it suffered during the war, the release of its frozen assets, and the cessation of threats directed at it and its allies in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump described the compensation demands as "an interesting idea," while he himself called for compensation for American casualties and injuries that he said Iran is responsible for.
The negotiations are further complicated by what a U.S. official described as a division within Iran's decision-making centers between the Revolutionary Guard, clerics, and the government, indicating that reaching an agreement with one party does not guarantee the approval of the other parties. Continuous attacks in the region, including targeting oil tankers with drones while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, also increase the risks of escalation.
Economic Pressures Before the Elections
The Trump administration is betting on escalating economic pressures to push Tehran to make concessions, with Washington ready to launch a new campaign to isolate the Iranian economy and tighten sanctions and the blockade. This comes ahead of the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for less than three months, amid the White House's desire to avoid the continuation of the war and its political and economic repercussions.
However, Iran's ability to withstand the pressures remains in question, as some insiders on the negotiations believe that Tehran may be able to endure the sanctions, which limits the chances of reaching a quick settlement.
In contrast, Washington insists that imposing transit fees or granting Iran control over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is non-negotiable, keeping one of the main points of contention open and making the future of the truce contingent on urgent diplomatic action to avoid a return to escalation.
