The Lebanese judiciary interrogated the Syrian general in Assad's regime, Adel Issa, after he was arrested at the Syrian embassy in the Baabda area of Mount Lebanon last week.
Informed sources revealed that the Attorney General of Cassation, Judge Ahmad Rami Al-Haj, interrogated the former Syrian general, commander of the 17th Division, on charges of committing military crimes during his service in the former Syrian army, according to local media reports.
The sources indicated that the judge decided to hand over Issa to the Syrian judiciary in accordance with the judicial cooperation agreement between the two countries, which obligates both sides to extradite and deliver fugitives from the citizens of each state.
Many Syrians expressed their joy at the pursuit and accountability of everyone involved in the bloody war and who committed atrocities against Syrians during the conflict.
The former general entered the Syrian embassy last week, believing that there were no charges against him.
Embassy staff contacted the Lebanese judicial authorities, which in turn sent investigative officers to the embassy, who received the general from the embassy staff and took him to the police station at the Beirut Palace of Justice.
The Attorney General of Cassation issued an order for his detention pending investigation; however, the detainee denied during the interrogations any involvement in violations or crimes during the Syrian war.
He stated that his division accompanied the Syrian military intelligence agencies and that he was discharged five years before the fall of the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It is noteworthy that Damascus has been pursuing what it describes as remnants of the fallen regime who were involved in the bloodshed of Syrians during the war for several months now.
Two days ago, the Syrian judiciary issued a default judgment sentencing Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher, who have fled to Russia, to death.
