The European Union has imposed new restrictive measures on Iranian judges due to accusations of human rights violations.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced today (Friday) that sanctions have been issued against a senior figure in an electronic group that enabled the regime to conceal information. She stated in a post on "X": "At a time when Tehran is increasing its repression at home, the EU will continue to hold those responsible accountable." Borrell did not mention the names of those targeted by the sanctions.
After the collapse of the ceasefire between the US and Iran, human rights groups fear that Tehran will escalate the execution of death sentences to intimidate and silence people.
Mohammad Amiri Moghaddam, director of Iran Human Rights, expressed deep concern that authorities will exploit the situation to intensify the execution of death sentences against political prisoners following the collapse of the ceasefire and the resumption of war.
The NGO that monitors executions in Iran warned that hundreds of political prisoners and protesters currently face charges that carry the death penalty, with death sentences already issued for about 100 of them.
The sentences include 70 individuals in just one prison, the Dastgerd Prison in the city of Isfahan in central Iran. The organization has repeatedly called for considering Iran's "killing machine" as a core part of any negotiations with the Islamic Republic.
According to the organization, 24 people have been executed in connection with the January protests since the beginning of the war, in addition to two others due to a previous protest movement that shook the Iranian streets between 2022 and 2023.
Thirteen other men were executed over allegations of links to the "Mujahedin-e Khalq" organization and other banned groups, while 10 people were executed on charges of espionage.
