أعلنت الداخلية العراقية تعرض صحفية أمريكية لعملية خطف على يد مجموعة من المسلحين المجهولين في وسط العاصمة بغداد، مؤكدة فتح تحقيق موسع لكشف ملابسات الحادث وتحديد مكان الصحفية.
وبحسب المعلومات المتداولة تعرضت شيلي رينيه كيتلسون الصحفية المستقلة المتخصصة في شؤون الشرق الأوسط وتعمل مع وسائل إعلام دولية مثل «المونيتور» و«فورين بوليسي» و«بي بي سي»، للاختطاف أمام فندق فلسطين وقرب فندق رويال غاردن في شارع السعدون وسط بغداد.
ودخلت الصحفية الأمريكية العراق يوم 24 مارس وكانت تقيم في الفندق المذكور، وأكدت مصادر أمنية عراقية أن مجهولين يستقلون سيارة نوع «أوباما» نفذوا العملية، ثم توجهوا بها نحو جنوب بغداد.
وأعلنت وزارة الداخلية أن القوات الأمنية باشرت عملها فوراً، وتمكنت من اعتقال أحد المشتبه بهم في الجريمة، فيما لا تزال التحقيقات جارية تحت إشراف جهاز المخابرات العراقي لتحديد هوية باقي الخاطفين ومكان احتجاز الصحفية.
يأتي الحادث في ظل توتر أمني ملحوظ في العراق، خصوصاً بعد سلسلة هجمات استهدفت مصالح أمريكية وتحذيرات متكررة من السفارة الأمريكية في بغداد لرعاياها من خطر الاختطاف والاستهداف من قبل فصائل مسلحة موالية لإيران.
وشيلي كيتلسون صحفية مستقلة (مواليد 1976) تقيم في إيطاليا، وتتمتع بخبرة واسعة في تغطية الشؤون السياسية والأمنية في الشرق الأوسط، وسبق أن عملت في مناطق ساخنة، لكن هذا الحادث يعد الأول من نوعه لها في العراق.
وشهد العراق في السنوات الماضية حالات اختطاف لصحفيين أجانب ومحليين، بعضها انتهى بالإفراج وبعضها الآخر كان أكثر تعقيداً.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry announced that an American journalist was kidnapped by a group of unknown armed men in the center of the capital, Baghdad, confirming that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances of the incident and determine the journalist's location.
According to circulating information, Shelly Renee Kittleson, an independent journalist specializing in Middle Eastern affairs and working with international media outlets such as "The Monitor," "Foreign Policy," and "BBC," was kidnapped in front of the Palestine Hotel and near the Royal Garden Hotel on Al-Saadoun Street in central Baghdad.
The American journalist entered Iraq on March 24 and was staying at the aforementioned hotel. Iraqi security sources confirmed that unidentified individuals in a vehicle of the "Obama" type carried out the operation, then headed south towards Baghdad with her.
The Ministry of Interior announced that security forces immediately began their work and managed to arrest one of the suspects in the crime, while investigations are still ongoing under the supervision of the Iraqi intelligence agency to identify the remaining kidnappers and the location where the journalist is being held.
This incident comes amid noticeable security tensions in Iraq, especially after a series of attacks targeting American interests and repeated warnings from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to its citizens about the risk of kidnapping and targeting by Iran-aligned armed factions.
Shelly Kittleson is an independent journalist (born in 1976) residing in Italy, with extensive experience in covering political and security affairs in the Middle East. She has previously worked in hot zones, but this incident marks the first of its kind for her in Iraq.
In recent years, Iraq has witnessed cases of kidnapping of both foreign and local journalists, some of which ended in release while others were more complicated.
