كشفت وسائل إعلام أمريكية، أمس (الأربعاء) عن خطة أمريكية لسحب قواتها البالغ عددها ألف جندي من سورية.
ونقلت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال» عن ثلاثة مسؤولين أمريكيين قولهم إن الولايات المتحدة بصدد سحب جميع قواتها البالغ عددها نحو ألف جندي من سورية، فيما أوضح اثنان من المسؤولين أن الجيش الأمريكي أكمل بالفعل انسحابه من قاعدة التنف، وهي موقع إستراتيجي على حدود سورية والأردن والعراق، ومن قاعدة الشدادي في شمال شرق سورية في وقت سابق من هذا الشهر.
وأضاف المسؤولون أن القوات ستنسحب من المواقع الأمريكية المتبقية في سورية خلال الشهرين القادمين، في حين قال مسؤولان أمريكان للصحيفة إن إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب قررت أن الوجود العسكري الأمريكي في سورية لم يعد ضرورياً، بسبب التفكك شبه الكامل لـ«قوات سوريا الديمقراطية (قسد)» التي يقودها الأكراد، التي كانت الشريك الرئيسي للولايات المتحدة في مكافحة تنظيم «داعش» في سورية على مدى العقد الماضي.
وكان الجيش الأمريكي قد أعلن الأسبوع الماضي إتمام انسحابه من قاعدة إستراتيجية في سورية وتسليمها للقوات السورية، في أحدث مؤشر إلى تعزيز العلاقات الأمريكية السورية، الأمر الذي قد يتيح انسحاباً أمريكياً أوسع نطاقاً.
وبدأ الوجود العسكري الأمريكي في سورية رسمياً في أكتوبر 2015، عندما نشرت الولايات المتحدة أول دفعة من القوات الخاصة يقدر عددها بنحو 50 مستشاراً «غير قتالي»، ضمن التحالف الدولي لمحاربة تنظيم «داعش».
American media revealed yesterday (Wednesday) a plan to withdraw its troops, numbering around a thousand soldiers, from Syria.
The Wall Street Journal reported that three American officials stated that the United States is in the process of withdrawing all its troops, which number about a thousand, from Syria. Two of the officials clarified that the U.S. military has already completed its withdrawal from the Tanf base, a strategic location on the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq, as well as from the Shaddadi base in northeastern Syria earlier this month.
The officials added that the troops will withdraw from the remaining U.S. positions in Syria over the next two months, while two American officials told the newspaper that the administration of President Donald Trump has decided that the U.S. military presence in Syria is no longer necessary, due to the near-total disintegration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is led by the Kurds and has been the main partner of the United States in combating ISIS in Syria over the past decade.
Last week, the U.S. military announced the completion of its withdrawal from a strategic base in Syria and its handover to Syrian forces, in the latest indication of strengthening American-Syrian relations, which could allow for a broader U.S. withdrawal.
The U.S. military presence in Syria officially began in October 2015, when the United States deployed the first batch of special forces, estimated at around 50 "non-combat" advisors, as part of the international coalition to combat ISIS.
