في ظل الأزمة التي تعصف بحكومته على خلفية تعيينه بيتر ماندلسون سفيراً لبريطانيا في واشنطن رغم علاقته الوثيقة بالأمريكي الراحل جيفري إبستين المتهم بارتكاب جرائم لا أخلاقية، تعهد رئيس الوزراء البريطاني كير ستارمر، أمس (الثلاثاء)، بعدم التخلي أبداً عن مهمته في تغيير بريطانيا.
وقال ستارمر أمام الجمهور خلال زيارته مركزاً اجتماعياً بجنوب إنجلترا: «لن أتخلى أبداً عن المهمة المكلف بها لتغيير هذا البلد، ولن أتخلى أبداً عن الشعب الذي أضطلع بمهمة الدفاع عنه، ولن أتخلى أبداً عن البلد الذي أحبه»، مضيفاً: «المعركة الحقيقية مع سياسات حزب الإصلاح، وسياسات الانقسام والضغينة التي ستمزق بلدنا».
وجاء ذلك بعد يوم من أكبر تحدٍّ لسلطته عندما طالبه زعيم حزب العمال في أسكتلندا أنس سروار بالاستقالة، بعد استقالة اثنين من مساعديه في غضون أيام.
وتسبب الكشف عن العلاقة الوطيدة بين ماندلسون وإبستين في أكبر تهديد حتى الآن لستارمر، الذي أكد مراراً أن السفير السابق والسياسي في حزب العمال كذب بشأن علاقاته بإبستين.
وأدرجت وزارة العدل الأمريكية رسائل بريد إلكتروني تشير إلى أن ماندلسون سرب خلال الأزمة المالية مناقشات بشأن احتمال بيع أصول بريطانية وتعديلات ضريبية إلى إبستين، ولم يعلق ماندلسون علناً على ما قيل عن تسريبه وثائق، ولم يرد على رسائل تطلب التعليق، لكنه يخضع الآن لتحقيق من الشرطة بشأن اتهامات بإساءة استغلال المنصب.
In light of the crisis engulfing his government following his appointment of Peter Mandelson as the British Ambassador to Washington, despite his close ties to the late American Jeffrey Epstein, who is accused of committing immoral crimes, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged yesterday (Tuesday) never to abandon his mission to change Britain.
Starmer said in front of the public during his visit to a community center in southern England: "I will never give up the mission I have been tasked with to change this country, and I will never abandon the people I have taken on the responsibility to defend, and I will never forsake the country I love," adding: "The real battle is against the policies of the reform party, and the politics of division and hatred that will tear our country apart."
This came a day after the biggest challenge to his authority when the leader of the Labour Party in Scotland, Anas Sarwar, called for his resignation, following the resignation of two of his aides within days.
The revelation of the close relationship between Mandelson and Epstein has posed the biggest threat yet to Starmer, who has repeatedly asserted that the former ambassador and Labour politician lied about his connections to Epstein.
The U.S. Department of Justice included emails indicating that Mandelson leaked discussions during the financial crisis regarding the potential sale of British assets and tax modifications to Epstein. Mandelson has not publicly commented on the allegations of leaking documents and has not responded to requests for comment, but he is now under police investigation regarding allegations of abuse of power.
