في خطوة وُصفت بأنها تحول جديد في دبلوماسية البيت الأبيض، نجح الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب في رعاية اتفاق سلام تاريخي بين كمبوديا وتايلند، أنهى حرباً قصيرة اندلعت بين البلدين في يوليو الماضي، وذلك خلال أولى محطات جولته الآسيوية التي بدأت في العاصمة الماليزية كوالالمبور.
وجرى توقيع الاتفاق في حفل رسمي حضره قادة كمبوديا وتايلند وماليزيا، إلى جانب كبار المسؤولين الأمريكيين، من بينهم وزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو ورئيسة موظفي البيت الأبيض سوزي وايلز. وقال ترمب خلال كلمته في الحفل: «اليوم هو يوم عظيم لشعوب جنوب شرق آسيا، فالسلام هو أعظم انتصار يمكن أن نحققه جميعاً».
يتضمن الاتفاق إطلاق سراح 18 أسيراً كمبودياً وإجراءات لخفض التوترات على الحدود، وخلال فعاليات قمة رابطة دول جنوب شرق آسيا (آسيان) في كوالالمبور، حرص ترمب على تقديم نفسه «صانعَ سلامٍ عالميٍّ»، مشيراً إلى أنه لعب دوراً في إنهاء ثمانية نزاعات منذ بداية ولايته الثانية. كما تلقى ترشيحاً جديداً لجائزة نوبل للسلام من رئيس وزراء كمبوديا هون مانيت.
وكشف رئيس الوزراء الماليزي أنور إبراهيم خلال القمة موقفاً طريفاً جمعه بترمب قائلاً: «عندما وصل الرئيس، طلب مني الصعود معه إلى سيارته المصفحة، رغم أن ذلك مخالف للبروتوكول، لكنه قال لي إنه يحب كسر القواعد». وأضاف ممازحاً: «قلت له إنني كنت في السجن، وهو كاد أن يذهب هناك أيضاً».
ورغم أن البيت الأبيض يواجه إغلاقاً حكومياً يدخل أسبوعه الرابع، أصر ترمب على أن «الولايات المتحدة تعيش عصرها الذهبي»، في محاولة لتصدير صورة القيادة القوية إلى الخارج، بينما ينتظر العالم ما ستسفر عنه محادثاته المقبلة مع قادة آسيا.
In a move described as a new shift in White House diplomacy, U.S. President Donald Trump successfully brokered a historic peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, ending a brief war that erupted between the two countries last July, during the first stop of his Asian tour that began in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The agreement was signed at an official ceremony attended by the leaders of Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia, along with senior U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House Chief of Staff Suzy Wiles. Trump said during his speech at the ceremony: “Today is a great day for the people of Southeast Asia, for peace is the greatest victory we can all achieve.”
The agreement includes the release of 18 Cambodian prisoners and measures to reduce tensions at the border. During the ASEAN summit events in Kuala Lumpur, Trump made sure to present himself as a “global peacemaker,” noting that he has played a role in ending eight conflicts since the beginning of his second term. He also received a new nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim revealed a humorous incident he had with Trump during the summit, saying: “When the president arrived, he asked me to get into his armored car with him, even though that was against protocol, but he told me he likes to break the rules.” He added jokingly: “I told him that I had been in prison, and he almost went there too.”
Despite the White House facing a government shutdown entering its fourth week, Trump insisted that “the United States is experiencing its golden age,” in an attempt to project an image of strong leadership abroad, while the world awaits the outcome of his upcoming talks with Asian leaders.
