The American ambassador to Yemen, Stephen Fagin, accused the Houthis today (Sunday) of continuing to unlawfully detain employees of his embassy in Sana'a.
Fagin stated, "Today marks a sad and unfortunate anniversary, as it has been 4 years since the Houthis unlawfully detained our friends and Yemeni colleagues working at the American embassy in Sana'a. As the American ambassador to Yemen, I bear the burden of this injustice every day," adding, "My thoughts and the efforts of our mission remain focused on these innocents, and on their families who have suffered from their absence for so long."
He pointed out that the continued detention of these professionals and their mistreatment is an act of deliberate cruelty that embodies the nature of the Houthi group, and the systematic pattern of hostage-taking that they continue to practice today against humanitarian mission employees who seek to help Yemeni citizens, noting that this is the most prominent characteristic of a group that cares little for the welfare of the Yemeni people or the rule of law.
The American ambassador confirmed that instead of abandoning their violent vision, the Houthis take innocent Yemenis as scapegoats, accusing them of espionage, and fabricating grievances unrelated to the dreams and aspirations of ordinary Yemeni citizens, explaining that the Houthis' use of fabricated evidence, and "coerced confessions," along with the suppression of Yemeni voices, is a blatant violation of human dignity, and proves that their isolation from the international community is a natural response to their complete loss of credibility.
The American ambassador reiterated his commitment to the families of the detainees that his country will not tolerate or cease to exert pressure, and will not rest until every person wrongfully detained is released unconditionally and returns to their home and loved ones.
