Two Iraqis were injured in an unknown armed attack targeting the office of a parliamentary election candidate south of Baghdad today (Saturday).
Iraqi sources revealed that unknown gunmen opened fire at the office of parliamentary election candidate Muthanna Al-Izawi in the Yusufiya area, 25 kilometers south of the capital Baghdad. According to the sources, the attack resulted in injuries to two members of the protection team, and the gunmen fled the scene.
Al-Izawi, a member of the Baghdad Provincial Council, strongly condemned the cowardly attack on his office on Facebook.
He affirmed that these alien acts will not deter him from continuing to serve the citizens, stressing that the law is above all, and the perpetrators will be punished for their actions sooner or later. Al-Izawi belongs to the "Azm Alliance," a Sunni Iraqi political coalition headed by Muthanna Al-Samarrai.
This attack comes three days after the assassination of parliamentary election candidate Safaa Al-Mashhadani, who was a member of the Baghdad Provincial Council, following an explosion of an explosive device targeting his vehicle, which resulted in injuries to three members of his protection team in Tarmiya, 40 kilometers north of the capital.
This is the first assassination attempt in the legislative elections expected to take place on November 11.

Amendments to the Security Plan

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior has begun making amendments to the comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of the upcoming general elections scheduled for November 11. These amendments came after the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee called for the development of the security plan for the voting day to suit the sensitivity of the stage.
Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee member Ali Ni'ma Al-Bandawi stated that the current phase requires effective preemptive operations and the activation of intelligence and security elements in various provinces to ensure that no security breaches occur or attempts to influence the electoral process.
He added that it is important to rotate the ground forces to avoid cases of slackness or security laxity, and to enhance field deployment in line with the sensitivity of the upcoming phase, as the security of the elections is the cornerstone of their success and integrity.
The committee's request comes two days after the assassination of Baghdad Provincial Council member and parliamentary election candidate Safaa Hussein Al-Mashhadani, while Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani confirmed that the government will take all necessary measures to reach the perpetrators and bring them to justice to receive their fair punishment.
The Deputy Commander of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadi, announced the formation of a cybersecurity committee to protect the electoral process, confirming that there is fruitful cooperation with the Independent High Electoral Commission.
He pointed out that there are clear recommendations being followed by the security forces under the supervision of the judiciary to counter attacks on candidates and headquarters, and there are many preemptive operations to maintain security stability to create a suitable environment for conducting the electoral process.
