أعلن المتحدث باسم الأمين العام ستيفان دوجاريك، أن مصور الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب قد يكون السبب وراء توقف السلم الكهربائي أثناء وصوله مع السيدة الأولى ميلانيا إلى الجمعية العامة.
وقال دوجاريك إن الحادث وقع الساعة 9:50 صباحا بتوقيت نيويورك، عندما كان المصور يسير عكسيا على السلم لتسجيل الوصول، ما أدى إلى تفعيل آلية أمان مدمجة لمنع السقوط، موضحا أن الجهاز توقف تلقائيا بعد تفعيل «درجة المشط» العلوية، وهي خاصية مصممة لحماية المستخدمين.
وخلال خطابه أمام قادة العالم، سخر ترمب من الواقعة، مشيرا إلى أن شاشة القراءة تعطلت أيضا، قائلا وسط ضحكات البعض: «هذان هما اللذان حصلت عليهما من الأمم المتحدة؛ السلم المتحرك السيئ وشاشة القراءة السيئة».
موقف حاد
وفي المقابل، اتخذت السكرتيرة الصحفية للبيت الأبيض كارولين ليفيت موقفا حادا، وكتبت على منصة «X»: «إذا أوقف أحد في الأمم المتحدة السلم عمدا، يجب فصله والتحقيق فورا»، في حين لم يصدر رد رسمي فوري من البيت الأبيض حتى الآن.
ويعود تاريخ أنظمة السلم الكهربائي في مقر الأمم المتحدة إلى عقود، إذ تم تركيبها كجزء من البنية التحتية عند افتتاح المقر في 1952، وتُعتبر هذه الأنظمة مصممة بمعايير أمان عالية، بما في ذلك آليات مثل «درجة المشط» التي تتوقف عند اكتشاف أي عائق غير متوقع.
ووفقا لتقارير شهدت الأمم المتحدة في السنوات الأخيرة شكاوى متكررة من عيوب تقنية بسبب الاستخدام المكثف ونقص الصيانة، خصوصا خلال الاجتماعات السنوية رفيعة المستوى.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, announced that the photographer for U.S. President Donald Trump may be the reason behind the stoppage of the escalator as he and First Lady Melania arrived at the General Assembly.
Dujarric stated that the incident occurred at 9:50 AM New York time, when the photographer was walking backward on the escalator to capture the arrival, which triggered a built-in safety mechanism to prevent falls, explaining that the device stopped automatically after activating the upper "comb step," a feature designed to protect users.
During his speech before world leaders, Trump mocked the incident, noting that the teleprompter had also malfunctioned, saying amid laughter from some: "These are the two things I got from the United Nations; the bad escalator and the bad teleprompter."
Sharp Stance
In contrast, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt took a sharp stance, writing on the platform "X": "If someone at the United Nations deliberately stopped the escalator, they should be fired and investigated immediately," while no immediate official response has been issued from the White House yet.
The history of escalator systems at the United Nations headquarters dates back decades, as they were installed as part of the infrastructure when the headquarters opened in 1952, and these systems are considered designed with high safety standards, including mechanisms like the "comb step" that stops upon detecting any unexpected obstruction.
According to reports, the United Nations has seen repeated complaints in recent years about technical defects due to heavy use and lack of maintenance, especially during high-level annual meetings.
The incident sparked mixed reactions, as while Trump used the event as material for humor before the assembly, some viewed Levitt's statements as an attempt to directly accuse the United Nations, which could increase tensions between Washington and the organization.
