The Australian government announced today (Tuesday) that Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi has become a persona non grata, withdrew its ambassador from Tehran, and suspended its embassy operations, accusing Iran of being behind two "anti-Semitic" attacks in Melbourne and Sydney. It announced that it would work to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, while Tehran stated that it is considering a response.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced at a press conference that Australia has given the Iranian ambassador and three other Iranian diplomats a seven-day deadline to leave the country.
She clarified that this is the first time Australia has expelled an ambassador in the post-World War II era.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that intelligence agencies reached a "very concerning conclusion" that Iran orchestrated at least two "anti-Semitic" attacks.
He stated at a press conference that Tehran is behind an arson attack targeting the Louis Continental café, which specializes in serving kosher food for Jews, in the Bondi suburb of Sydney in October 2024.
He added that intelligence concluded that Iran is also behind an arson attack targeting the Adas Israel synagogue in Melbourne in December 2024, and that neither of the attacks resulted in human casualties. He described the attacks as "exceptionally aggressive and dangerous acts orchestrated by a foreign state on Australian soil." He emphasized that the attacks were attempts to undermine social cohesion and sow discord in Australian society. This is absolutely unacceptable. Albanese anticipated that Iran could be behind other "anti-Semitic" attacks that occurred in Australia, affirming that his country would initiate the necessary procedures to classify the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a "terrorist organization." The Prime Minister announced that all accredited Australian diplomats in Iran are now "safe in a third country," which he did not specify.
For his part, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei announced that Tehran is considering a response to Australia's decision to expel the ambassador, stressing that any inappropriate action at the diplomatic level will be met with a similar response.
He considered the decision to be "influenced by Canberra's internal affairs," pointing to the demonstrations calling for Australia to take a stand against the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Baqaei rejected the Australian accusations at a weekly press conference, stating that "the accusations against us are completely rejected, as the concept of anti-Semitism has no existence in our religion; it is a term coined by the West, and they must bear the responsibility for their historical past," according to his expression.
