The British newspaper "Daily Mail" revealed details of the conversation that took place between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during their meeting at Anchorage Airport in Alaska on the red carpet.
The newspaper quoted a lip-reading expert saying: The first words exchanged during the meeting were Trump saying, "Finally." When shaking hands, Trump said, "You did it finally, I’m glad to see you, I’m very grateful."
The expert added that during the warm greeting, the two presidents agreed to "cooperate." Later, when ascending the platform, Trump spoke about the importance of the handshake as it "leaves a good impression," to which the Russian president nodded, extending his hand to the American president.
The newspaper "The Sun" quoted British lip-reading expert Nicola Heakling, stating that the brief dialogue between them carried significant implications for the future of bilateral relations and the war in Ukraine.
She said: Putin confidently walked on the red carpet, pointing with his thumb towards Trump, who responded with a smile and applause saying, "Finally," then added, "You’ve arrived, it’s great to see you, and I’m grateful for that."
According to Heakling, this was a signal from Trump to break the ice and show warmth, while Putin appeared calm and confident, as if sending a message that he was coming from a position of strength.
The conversation then shifted to the war in Ukraine, and Putin said in English: "Thank you - and you too," adding, "I’m here to help you," to which Trump replied, "I’ll help you." Putin continued, "I will put an end to this," and Trump responded, "I hope that happens."
Experts believe that these simple phrases outlined the contours of a preliminary understanding regarding the possibility of de-escalation or a ceasefire.
As they headed to the presidential vehicle known as "The Beast," Trump smiled and said, "We need to move forward and give the matter the attention it deserves. I know it’s serious and long. What a journey." Trump suggested shaking hands again in front of the journalists, saying, "Let’s shake hands, this gives a good impression," to which Putin responded with a smile saying, "Thank you."
The closed talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American President Donald Trump lasted for two hours and 45 minutes.
The meeting took place at the "Elmendorf-Richardson" military base in Anchorage, where the discussions were held in a "three versus three" format.
