Despite the fact that the Alaska summit did not result in a declaration of a ceasefire in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin emerged with good impressions from their meeting, which they described as "constructive and positive." They agreed to hold a second meeting, likely in the capital, Moscow.
In this context, many of Putin's supporters celebrated what they considered a "victory," seeing it as an important gateway for the return of Russian-American relations. Retired General and member of the Russian parliament Andrei Gurulyov stated, "Putin's statements showed that the Kremlin's position is firm."
In a post on his Telegram channel, he added, "The meeting can be considered an achievement, as Putin was able to explain face-to-face to Trump the reasons for the war." He emphasized that a "meeting between the Presidents of Russia and the United States is indeed an achievement after everything that has happened."
Meanwhile, Russian political researcher Alexander Dugin described the meeting as excellent. He wrote on his account on the "X" platform this Saturday: "The best outcome we can expect!"
On the Ukrainian side, Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Ukrainian parliament, viewed the meeting as a public relations victory for Putin, who appeared as an equal to Trump and "showed that he is not isolated."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Putin does not want peace and will try to "deceive America," stating in a video clip: "Russia continues its killing even on the day of negotiations... this says a lot."
The Kremlin had expected the meeting between the two presidents to last between 6 and 7 hours, but in reality, Trump and Putin met behind closed doors for more than two and a half hours, with a short break in between.
The two presidents were supposed to meet again in a second meeting with a wider circle of attendees, but that did not happen.
According to sources, it was initially expected that the two presidents would meet privately upon their arrival, but the White House announced just minutes before the summit began that the meeting would be 3 against 3, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House envoy Steve Witkoff joining Trump. According to U.S. media, the two presidents only had a short break and did not have lunch together.
The two presidents held a joint press conference after the summit, despite the fact that the U.S. president had suggested he would hold a separate conference if the summit failed, a scenario he estimated had a 25% chance of occurring.
It is worth noting that this meeting is the seventh between Trump and Putin over the past years.
The last visit by the Russian president to the United States was in 2015, ten years ago.
