Iraq and Iran signed an agreement regarding security coordination for the shared borders between the two countries today (Monday).
The agreement was signed by Iraqi National Security Advisor Qassem al-Araji and Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, in the presence of Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani.
During a meeting with Larijani, al-Sudani affirmed Iraq's earnest efforts to develop relations with Iran and enhance fruitful partnerships in various aspects and fields, in a way that serves the interests of both the Iraqi and Iranian peoples.
He reiterated in a statement issued by his office "Iraq's principled and steadfast position regarding the rejection of the Zionist aggression against Iran, and anything that leads to the escalation of conflicts at the regional and international levels, and Iraq's support for American-Iranian dialogue."
Regional Tour
Larijani arrived in Iraq on Monday for an official visit as part of a tour that will include Lebanon. He stated that he would convey "messages to Beirut" during this visit. Larijani met with al-Araji, and they discussed cooperation and joint coordination between Iraq and Iran, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA). Al-Araji confirmed that the Iraqi government is working diligently to prevent any security breaches aimed at infringing upon any of the neighboring countries.
Before heading to Baghdad, he stated that Iran's security is linked to the security of its neighbors, adding: "We have prepared a security agreement with Iraq. Iran's vision and approach in its relations with its neighbors is that the security of Iranians is fundamental, while at the same time, it pays special attention to the security of its neighbors, unlike some countries that only care about their own security, and this agreement will be signed during this visit." He noted that the second part of the tour pertains to a visit to Lebanon, especially since it is a very important country in the region and influential in West Asia, and we have long-standing relations with the Lebanese people. Larijani added that there are "shared civilizational roots between Iran and Lebanon, and for this reason, our cooperation with the Lebanese government has a long history and wide scope."
Larijani stated that his country's positions in Lebanon are clear, and we see that national unity is an important issue that must be preserved, Lebanon's independence is always important to us, and increasing trade relations between the two countries is a significant matter.
