President Donald Trump announced that he is working on a plan to "feed the people" in Gaza.
Axios reported today (Friday) that Trump said, "We want to help the people. We want to help them live. We want to feed them. This is something that should have happened a long time ago."
Despite expressing concern over reports of famine in Gaza, he blamed Hamas, saying they steal aid and resell it within the sector. He spoke about his envoy, Steve Witkoff, stating that he is "doing a great job."
On Friday, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee visited aid distribution centers run by the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" in the sector.
Witkoff reported that the purpose of the visit to Gaza was to provide President Trump with a comprehensive overview of the humanitarian situation, noting that his visit to the Palestinian territory lasted 5 hours. He added, "Our goal in visiting Gaza is to lay the groundwork for the facts on the ground and assess the conditions." He announced that he discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza with the Israelis.
Witkoff arrived at a time when international pressure is increasing on Netanyahu's government due to the widespread destruction in Gaza and the restrictions on aid in the sector.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights announced on Friday that 1,373 Palestinians have been killed since May 27, most of them by Israeli military fire, while waiting for aid in the devastated and famine-threatened Gaza Strip.
The Commission's office for the Palestinian territories stated in a release: "In total, since May 27, at least 1,373 Palestinians have been killed while trying to obtain food, 859 of them in the vicinity of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation sites, and 514 along food convoy routes."
It confirmed that most of the killings were carried out by the Israeli military, clarifying: "Even though we know there are other armed individuals in the same areas, we have no information indicating their involvement in these killings." The United States announced that it will continue to support the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation despite the Israeli military acknowledging that civilians were harmed at the aid distribution center.
More than 170 international relief organizations called for the immediate closure of the "Gaza Humanitarian Foundation" in early July, stating that it puts civilians at risk of death and injury.
